it takes long enough to get a WU done today i connected to send in my 3rd WU... (just getting started, just joined) after it downloaded a new one it showed i completed 3 WU while it worked on the new WU... soon my iMac froze I had to force quit... upon restart i launched SETI, it asked to connect again when i did, it was back to 2 WUs and starting a new one...
any idea on why i lost the WU i sent?
just getting started so i want to get this right for next time...
using my new iMac DV SE 500mhz

I think you are using a ramdisk. Correct me when I am wrong. It appears the ramdisk was not writen when u restarted the computer. (your computer probably crashed). When the computer booted it loaded the former (with only 2 WU completed) seti files, back into the ramdisk. And you continued crunching the unit you just finished.
The best thing to do is to complete erase your ramdisk and the delete the alias in the application support folder in your system folder. Next launch seti manually. It will ask if u are a returning user (which u are). Fill in your e-mail, and voila your WU count should be alright now. Then copy the new files to your ramdisk.
Of course the very best thing is : DON'T crash. I lost several wu, which were almost done due to crashes. Really pissed me off esp when you forget to delete the old files. One continues to crunch the old one and then when it's done, Seti plainly says, 'we already received the result of this WU. Your stats will be updated'. IE, your counter will be updated but you have lost several hours crunching a useless unit.
Maybe someone else has other suggestions?
Paul

I would suggest that you skip the RAM disk for a couple weeks. Get used to your new iMac DVSE, learn your way around the System folder, install software. When you have your system settled down nice and stable, kick the RAM disk back in.
Without the RAM disk, your units will take a bit longer. But that's better than losing units and wasting time on old units.
Welcome aboard.

ok turned off the RAM Disk for now...
should i be concerned about not turning off my iMac for Overnight SETI crunching? I know i get a grey screen but the light is power button is on (dimmer)... Just want to know if this is normal use since the top of my mac is so HOT.
I'm in love with my Graphite you see so i want to know how to best treat it...

Personally I've lost far more work units because of RAM Disks than I have saved time with it... I've turned RAM disks of all my Macs running SETI.

I don't think running on a RAM Disk will save much time on a unit. It will, however, let your hard drive spin down. With the hard drive spun down, you can't hear the computer running at all. Deadly silent. Good if you crunch overnight with the mac in your room.
Naz, that 3 hours difference is becuase the units are different, not because of the RAM Disk.
