I run SETI 3 on my iMac rev.B, 64MB RAM, OS 9,04. Average time is over 30 hours per WU against 22 hours on prior versions. Is it normal? Any clues for speeding up? SETI 3 is running on its own at night.I launch it when leaving the computer so it works when i sleep.

Salut,

you should get 17/18 hours max with SETI 3.0,
in the SETI preferences enable the screensaver part, with blank screen after 1 min.

When you leave the computer you don't have to launch SETI,
it will automatically kick in after 1 min.

You can search the forum for more speed improvement but this is the most effective one.

Bon courage

One workunit is 22 hours is what I was doing on SETI2 with my RevB for I "customized" it for SETI.

Virtual Memory slows processing time. Turn it off *IF* it will not otherwise advisely affect your other computing tasks, that is if your iMac can still do what it needs to do with only 64 MB RAM without the extra memory due to Virtual Memory.

Peekaboo from http://www.clarkwoodsoftware.com will allow to set SETI as a higher priority application for the CPU to process when more than one applications are open. You can also use Peekaboo for any other applications that are vital to you.

Cache overclocking using G3 controllers from Powerlogix or XLR8 or using G3 Strip will also decrease your processing time. These increase the speed at which the CPU receives instructions. My iMac RevB is currently using the XLR8 with cache speed set at 155 MHz, or 3:2 CPU:cache, and I have yet to crash due to the overclocked cache. G3 Strip is shareware, but it gives more information than the other two, which are free.

I'll add more when I get a chance.

You may be frustrated, but you just about made my day. My 233/604e cranks units in about 27 hours. I'm so proud of it! <g>

My slot loading iMac has 128 MB RAM, VM off and kill monitor after 1 min running SETI. My iMac will run v3.0 in about 10-15 hours dependinf on the data received.

Thanks for your replies. Unfortunately, i must use Virtual Memory until i get more RAM. My last work units lasted 22 and 25 hours, so perhaps had i very interesting ones before. I tried both free overclocking applications but they are not usable on my French MacOS 9.04, they freeze my iMac at start up.
Thanks to all anyway

My last work unit was done in 17h12' so i suppose it was not really interesting. But the fact that some WU are done twice as fast as the others is worth mentionning.

Hey Danometer,

By what percentage/time will be the advantage of turning VM off? I am currently limited to computer usage with my Rev B, so I need to produce the maximum output in the minimum time allotted.

I am running GUI Client 3.0 on Rev B iMac (233MHz, OS 9.0.4, 40G, 256M-VM set to 257M). Any thoughts?
