Hi All,
I am interested in joining your team, and I was hoping you could help me with some information.

I have an IT friend at work who is into SETI@home, and I was chatting with him, asking him about it. When I mentioned I just bought a new Mac (Dual G4-500 640MB RAM) he made the standard comment-you guessed it-"Why don't you get a real computer..." Grrr. Of course, said with a grin, but...you know he meant it. So.

I want to turn my box into a SETI monster (as best I can) and I was hoping someone would be able to give me specific tips on how to do that with this box. I would also like stats on specifically: What is a kick butt Pentium do, can I beat it, and how can I convey it to him in his terms that my machine really screams.

Now, I say that because I get the impression from what I have read that the G4 does this pretty well.

In return, I will enjoy being part of your team (if you will have me) and learning more about this mysterious SETI society that I knew very little about! Any thoughts on this? Any technical reasons why the Mac is better would be good...I have a fairly good handle on computer technology, so I can understand to a decent degree! Fire away!

Also...I have some RAM to burn, if I leave this thing on all day while I am at work...does anyone know if it is possible to boot from a RAM disk, and how it is done?

The RAM disk need only be 1 MB for SETI.

Unfortunately new Power Macs don't support ROM booting.

Welcome to the team, btw!
