Berkeley put an OS X version on their servers this weekend.
I've been running two copies of the CLI version on my G4 DP450,
but since the OS X version SUPPORTS MP, I'm hoping the
screensaver will be just as fast....
Judging solely on processor usage (using "top" or ProcessViewer),
I'm only getting 150% utilization with the screensaver. The CLI was
around 190%!!
Anyone else download it?

How do you make SETI run on both processors in the CLI version?
------------------
G3 400, 384, 12 + 75 GB
PM 8500 - 150, 48, 1 GB
PM 7100 - 66, 32, 700 MB
PM 6100 - 66, 40, 4.5 GB

I open two terminal sessions, each running a unique copy of seti. I called the folders "seti1" and "seti2". Then I ran both in verbose mode.
Also, there are instructions either in the readme or FAQ's... I forget!
I think I am giving up on this screensaver thing. Strangely it seems to use BOTH processors, but it physically takes about the same time to complete a work unit (I'm talking about clock hours, not CPU hours). CLI is still the best way in my opinion!!

Machine config: G4 450DP/576/20G with OS X (classic off, dev CD not installed). No other apps running. Firmware update NOT installed.
CLI: 15h 20m (average over 10 units)
CLIx2: 15h 35m (average over 30 units)
DP saver: 15h 45m (average over 2 units)
Note: times above are NOT CPU hours
What confuses me is the new dual-processor capable screensaver!
Why does it take so long?!!! I turned the screensaver part off,
and just minimized the window to the dock. I was expecting 9-10h
per unit!
Running "top" I find processor utilization at:
CLI: 98%
CLIx2: 95%, 95%
DP saver: 150%
The screensaver is FAR less aggressive than the CLI!
In fact, if I run Mail or Explorer, the CPU Monitor
stays at 100% (x2). If I run the screensaver, there
is available CPU cycles that are not being used!!!!!

CLI (Command Line Interface) = Terminal
Download the following:
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/pub/setiathome/setiathome-3.03.powerpc-apple-darwin1.2.tar
Uncompress the file.
From the terminal it would be:
"tar -xvf setiathome-3.03.powerpc-apple-darwin1.2.tar"
Note: make sure your in the right directory!
From the terminal, type the following to run the program:
"./setiathome" OR "./setiathome -verbose"
(verbose gives you feedback as it processes the work unit)
Check the readme, "more readme", for more options.

thank you so much !!!!!
One more question now that I'm up and running.
How do I shut it of?
Is there another way than just quiting the terminal?

The answer is in the readme, but...
Open a new terminal window, go to your seti directory, and type:
kill `cat pid.sah`
That should do it!

cool thanx..
One more question.
I let it run all night through...about 7 hours and I made it up to 15%
Is this normal. When using the screensaver it takes about 32 hours / unit. That is slow right?
I have a G4/400 320 MB ram.

In OS 9, I got 16-21hrs per unit with the screensaver (processor hours), I have no clue what it is in X.
But your times seem slow, as I have a G3-400.
------------------
G3 400, 384, 12 + 75 GB
PM 8500 - 150, 48, 1 GB
PM 7100 - 66, 32, 700 MB
PM 6100 - 66, 40, 4.5 GB

Advice: NEVER use the graphical version of Seti @ home.
All of that graphical prettyness is a big CPU waste.
The text version has always been better, on Macs under X and PCs.
FYI.

Oh yea...I have a question about that process killing.
everything works fine when I paste the kill `cat.pid.sah`command
in the other terminal window. But my problem is that I can't type it.
I can type the ` when typing text in TextEdit or on here...(obviously)
But it does not work in the terminal.
Any ideas?

Here is a very easy way to exit a termial app.
Control-C
Click on you terminal window hat is running the app, (Setiathome, Bitchx, RC5, .....whatever) and use Control-C. This will stop that process. Do not use Control-Z, that just suspends the process.
If you wan to kill apps, like sometimes IE hangs or another app hangs, go to a terminal window and type:
top
or
top -u
These will show the processes that running on your computer. You will see a PID number which is the process ID number. Then if IE hangs or whatever, then you type this:
kill <pid>
The pid being the Process number associated with the app running. When you kill this process, this is like the old "Force Quit", but more reliable.
Hope that this helps and that extra tip helps out so you don't have to reboot as much. Some times the Finder gets out of control and uses way more then it needs and I quit that and it restarts on its own.

I benchmarked the new GUI...it took 32 hours. The same machine ran the benchmark unit on the CLI in 19 hours.
I'm never using that POS again.
Submit benchmarks to www.teamlambchop.com ! (mine are all on page 3 now, since the mac client all around is slower. )
