Has anyone tried running seti in Virtual PC at the same time as in Mac OS? Just curious about the speed implications and unit crunching.

Thanks

Gawd...

I reckon your Mac times would drop /signficantly/ (if a G4/500 takes 5 hours it might take 20 now) while the VPC unit would probably take a good 20-30 hours.

Just guesstimates, really. Bottom line is it's not worth it. You have to remember that since you're running VPC, you're already using up gobs of processing power just to do that, so it's not like you're crunching 2 units for the price of 1...

I actually tried that on my 233 Rev B iMac with 160M RAM. In the Mac 8.6 environment only, when running SETI on blank screen after 1 minute, my time was around 12.5 hours. With VPC Win 98 and Mac 8.6 running, my times were about 18 hours in Mac OS, and 24.25 hours in VPC.

Misha said it best: "Bottom line is it's not worth it."
