After the RC5 race is over do you guys want to head on over to Ubero and attack it with a massive force?
Our team is ranked last, and we really need to close the gap before it is too large to close.
I for one am planning on putting a bit of power on Ubero.
What should we do?
1. Leave a holding force on RC5 and SETI and attack Ubero.
2. Lets keep the climb on RC5 going, screw Ubero.
3. We need more on SETI, lets focus on that.
4. Everyone go off and choose a project, lets try and do well on all three.
5. Recruit more and win all three projects

Still have to try out Ubero on a <gasp>Windoze</gasp> machine, I'll probably go with plan (1) and going for Ubero.
The reason? Current project is supporting UC Irvine (my alma mater) so I don't mind sending a few CPU cycles their way.
Cheers.

What is the incentive to do Ubero? With RC5 there is $1000 on the line. With Ubero, there is some vague reference to "some day we MAY pay you to use your computer's power". I'm sticking with RC5 until it's cracked. It won't be long before that happens. I bet less than 2 months. Statistically it should have happened already!

From what i understand by looking at RSA's page, there are about 10 unsolved RC5 challenges. dnet is only working on one of them. Thus RC5 won't be over for a long time.
Someone said it would be over on the 1st, but i don't see anything on the pages about RC5 ending?

I like the idea of SETI better... but I still have yet to read much about Ubero. What's cool about it?

I would suggest that people leave full power on RC5 until the Phlump race is called. That might be a few days after Jan 1.
dnetc stats have been terrible lately, we just went 3 days with no updates and I have no idea how we compare at the moment. If dnetc takes a day or two after the race to get an update up, I will have to interpolate where both parties were on the morning of Jan 1st. This will be a lot easier and more accurate if both our rates stayed constant.
-------------
After the race, I'm partial to SETI. However, I rather like Scott's #5 idea: Let's not fool around, just win everything.

I will be staying with RC5. Mainly because I have an advantage there, with three 500 MHz G4s.

I'm gonna keep up RC5 for now, but toss in a couple SETI units a week, or so. I don't have enough machinery to split it up too much, or I'll start slipping back in RC5. I'm still gaining 50-60 places a day, and I want to see where I eventually settle out.
If I get a new machine in the spring (good possibility-- the 150mz 604 is starting to seem positively glacial, and it won't play nice with OS X machines) I'll re-think that.

SETI really needs some attention.....its looking really bad.
So close to passing the next in line, and yet so far..
and a team right below us literally biting our A$$'s because they are so close...
We'll i've been on SETI and I'm staying on SETI.

Based on recent events in SETI, I'm going to change my plan.
I'm still going to punch it in Ubero, but when I get back to work I'm going to put a lot of comps on SETI. I'm almost at 2 million blocks in RC5, that's enough for me
My goal will be to push back OCUK and not let them pass, but also to get myself high in the rankings in Ubero. I'll be putting enough power on to make the top 10, and hopefully stay there.
I'd like to see us not ranked last in Ubero. I'll be we'll be updating the ubero section of the site soon ( http://team.macnn.com/index.phtml) with an optimization page, along with some tips and ideas. If anyone has any to submit, send em in to team@macnn.com .
Well, that's what I think.
What about you guys/gals?

I like the idea of putting more power into Ubero and SETI. Our SETI ranking is slowing declining, so that needs to be fixed. Also, Ubero teams are extremely new, and by starting out near the top, we might be able to bring in some wayward mac users who just happen to see a Macintosh team near the top of the list.
I think a slight decline in our RC5 power would be ok if it would help boost our SETI and Ubero rankings.

Once I get into the top 10-ish for Team MacNN on RC5, I'll probably reduce crunch rates to maintain my position and then point the rest at Ubero.
As it stands, I'm in 7th in Ubero team rankings and with a little more effort, I can probably get into the top 5. However, the jump from there to the next few places is a long, long climb.
Cheers.

I am amking my contributions to the Ubero slowly but surely. Much happiness abounds, brethren of the MacNN distributed computing team!

There doesn't seem to be much, if any, advantage to the G4 for Ubero, eh?
I installed the Ubero client on my PC (Duron 650) and my 400MHz TiBook and the G4 only completed 4 units all night, where as the Duron crunched through 38!
I set it up so that both RC5 and Ubero where running at the same time, but I played with the "CPU Hog" setting in Ubero so that RC5 and Ubero where taking about 50% of the CPU according to Task Manager in W2K and top in OS X.
That's probably why the Mac was so much slower... To get RC5 and Ubero to play nice together I had to set Ubero to 25%... where as on W2K I had it set to 93%.

If you are running ubero and rc5 then it's going to be much slower

Choose one. I think we should concentrate on distributed.net because our machines have a distinct advantage over their Wintel counterparts.

No G4s here, so no advantage for me.
I'm on Ubero, with the work comps to go to SETI soon.

Through some craziness I managed almost 10,000 blocks yesterday on RC5. I am sticking with it as long as it goes on. Then I think I am moving to SETI, since (a) I have a history there and (b) it is not written in Java (and hence does not run slow as hell).

i plan on putting the G4 533 back to full power on ubero as soon as i get back to school next week. I had to fall back to seti as i only have a modem connection here. lets pull up and kick some ubero ass......also does anyone know if sonnet is planning on releasing an upgrade for the G4 533, i would like dual processors or something to boost my speed a little. not that i'm complaining when i can churn out a seti WU in 13 hours flat.

The best thing about RC5 is the bragging right about how outstanding the G4 is! So I say then when that's over we switch to the contest that is the next best G4 friendly. Maybe that'll be dnet's replacement for RC5 or something else, we'll have to wait and see.
PS Has everyone forgotten about OGR? I'm pretty sure that's PPC optimized, although the x86 world's pure GHz still can beat us.
