Good news everyone...I have finally heard back from D.net and there should be an active RC5 Team MacNN within the next few days. I've joined the team but until the system has accepted and processed my W/Us to Team MacNN no one will find the team in the rankings. Keep crunching (SETI, too! ) and when Team MacNN is active I will give everyone the first ever RC5 Welcome Aboard!

Bad news everyone...Included in the email from D.net was a warning to downgrade to the client version 2.8010. A bug was found in the 2.8012 client and they WILL REJECT W/Us produced on this client. Here's part of the email:
-----
Also, please note that due to a problem in the newest version of the client
(2.8012) a downgrade to version 2.8010 is necessary. Please download the
old version at http://www.distributed.net/download/clients.html to continue
submitting blocks. All RC5 work submitted by 2.8012 clients will be
discarded and rejected.

do you know how often the client is upgraded?
cos from the long version string, looks like it's quite regular.

that's weird, where'd my post go? not like i was expecting a prize to make the first post about the rc5 team appearing. maybe it was too late and got lost in the server moves? still seems kinda shady...

I just joined too. I noticed that with a little help from Ooklathemok, we could be in the "Top 100 Teams Yesterday" for just about every day. We would need to crunch roughly 170MKeys/s; an attainable goal.

Also, today I managed to crunch 1002 units on my 350 Mhz G4, that'll be my best day ever. I hope that is added to the team tomorrow. We won't know until 6:00 UTC.

Well, I just joined.
You get a G3-400 which also runs SETI and popularpower.

Question: How will I run the OSX version?
Will I have to do it all in the UNIX part?

I may be getting a Dual 533 soon, I'm hoping.
That should be helpful

I've already been on Team Beef Roast since the day I started...if you had started up the team earlier I might have joined...

Anyway, all I can say is if you have any dual g4s at all, put rc5 on them. RC5 is the best app for dual g4 ever, maybe even better than Photoshop. And at least in my lab, it plays nice and runs in the background. All my computers run is Virtual PC and IE/Netscape and sometimes Quark though; YMMV.

I also still run the seti screensaver on all 15 or so and seti performance doesn't take a hit at all. RC5 thus runs on the other processor and both when seti isn't active.

The OS X version is command-line; BEIGE at Ars Technica has a screenshot of it using 199% CPU utilization. OOOOH yes.

Hah, finally got my password. Found my way to my stats and requested it. I am off to join. In six days, I just passed two folks doing it for over a year. Damm I love this G4 .. Current Ranking: 111,062 (^8742) Ranked 4,312 for the day.

It's official, add one G4 DP550. I've been running RC5 alongside S@H and don't see a lot of difference in either times. About 10 hrs for S@H and 2000-2500 per day for RC5. Actually I have RC5 running all the time and S@H whenever I'm not on the Mac.

Damn you G4 people.
I'm holding out for the dual 667/733 that mosrumors said may be out in next 2 weeks.

Any stats on RC5 single 533 vs single 667?

The 667 should perform linearly ahead of the 533. Here you can find a comparison of PPC performance. No one has bothered to bench a 667 yet, but a 533 was benched at 4,677,198 and a 733 at 6,529,242.

A dual machine will quite literally perform twice as well as a single-processor machine, since rc5 actually will run two cores. In fact, a dual may be more than twice as productive as a single-cpu machine, since the first cpu has to share with the OS and rc5 will have the second cpu all to itself. And if you run seti at the same time, a dual will always be better for rc5 because seti only runs on one cpu anyway.

I just got back from spring break and joined the team. It's nice to see my little iMac actually put up decent numbers on rc5.

I think you guys with G4's are scaring some of our old rivals. Looks like OCN still haunts the forums here and have taken notice.
http://forums.overclockers-network.c...ML/003226.html http://forums.overclockers-network.c...ML/003221.html

We still have a long way to go to catch them though, so crunch away

Ok posters time to let them have it. MacNN Staff It's our duty to let MacNN know we hate intelliTXT!

Yeah...Since the OCN fleet disbanded into their warring factions, we've made significant progress on them in SETI and RC5.

Copperon was banned because of the ugly people thread in the Lounge, but has found a way around MacNN's IP banning. I know TN is still lurking around watching out for Ca$h . OCN members do post *some* things that I respect and from which I learn tricks and hints. I read their fora on a regular basis because it can be entertaining at times and intelligent at others. Today I noticed that Brock was joining in on some of their fun. Let's just not let it turn into a flame war, okay?

p.s. TN is pissed because his twin Xeons can't perform on RC5 like they can on SETI.

Has anyone else browsed the speeds page at distributed.net. I saw in the multi-processor section a record of a Power Mac with 16 733Mhz processors, and it had an overall rate of 103Mkey/s!
http://n0cgi.distributed.net/speed/q...ll&multi=1

I don't know if this is true or a hoax, but I sure hope it's true. It's nice to know that the fastest RC5 computer is a Mac, and with a huge lead!

I shot Misha the email earlier today, and I included most of the basics.

Misha, if you need any more info, just reply back and i'd be happy to dig it up for you.

OCN is on the way to the smokehouse. Find any good performance boost ideas? I'm guessing the ramdisk probly won't help much.

Druber, the main boost you can do is change the priority of the client.

3)Performance....
3)Priority....

0-9 Nine being the highest

I'd strongly suggest only doing this when you are away from your machine or you'll be fighting for CPU cycles for basic use. When you come back to your computer in the morning or when your back, just set it back to zero.

Well, I decided that I would trash everyone's stats and join the MacNN RC5 team. Me and my lowly 8500/150 will chug along when we can. According to my first stats page, I'm averaging about 270k keys/sec. Most of the time though, I can chug through blocks at 460-490k keys/sec. You guys with your multiple dual G4's ain't got nothing on me Hope I can at least add a few blocks to our total. Guess we'll see...
Yeah, about those TPS reports, didn't you get the memo?

So, does that mean I should put my 8500-150 against yours?
I guess I will after I install the ram upgrade.
I bought ram on ebay, turns out they aren't pairs.
Is the speed hit 30% from not having pairs?

I'm desperately trying to convince my mom to buy dual 667 or 733s when they (supposedly) come out in a few weeks, and I'm trying to save to buy a dual G4 upgrade for my G3.
That will get some major processing done

thanx brock, i'll do this tonight. does the faceless client use different pref settings? i use that client at work, since i'm on the lan here. is the faceless client really any faster? is it worth switching back and forth just to change the priority setting? (peekaboo has it set on 'high' already)

malson, welcome in. i'm plugging with a 604-233 at home, maxes out at just under 600kkeys/sec, though while i'm doing other stuff it sits between 350 and 450kk/s. slow compared to those g4s, but the numbers still add up!

Yo, Brock, better call out the hounds. The G4 did 3659 blocks yesterday at a sustained rate of 11,368KKey/sec. This is fun. Gotta find the key... where is that confounded key?

No new members in several days now, no mention on MacNN. We need some publicity here,Misha.

P.S. Misha, post a pic of some Bluebonnets if ya get a chance. One of the few things I miss about Texas.

Zack
