Ok Hi I'm p3ngu1nb0y from Arstechnica...

I don't know about anyone else But I'm personally obsessed with those little numbers known as stats. That makes me a stats addict I would imagine.

I guess what I'm trying to do is see what the DC culture here is like... I know that there are some people that think "What can I do with my computer? It's slow and old." Well it won't matter if you have 10-100 people with one or so computers running the client will it. We have people that are SO obsessed with DC that they actually build 'farms' for their project of choice.. I know this isn't new but I've made a little site that has alot of pictures that numerous people have taken of their farm... The Directory... It's not much but it will show you what some people do.

Heh I know it sounds stupid but I just want to hear what you guys/gals think of getting hardcore into DC... even if you're straying into here let me know. If you have a problem ask... bug scotttheking for all I care... But DON'T just say "They don't really need me. Because in all reality they DO!"

Ars team sites... (not pimping but look for info if you need it here)

Hehe. I don't think people should acually invest money into these projects, instead running it on whatever hardware they have.

Even though my post is off-topic, you said for us to post anything.

That's true I'm just trying to get a feel for the forum at this point...

May I ask why you think that you shouldn't spend money on some projects?

I personally run genetic projects in the hopes that the research I help to complete will some day solve something.

I spend extra money on utilities to run DC stuff, but stop short of buying machines just to crunch.
Started with S@H a couple of years ago to be part of their research in DC. I imagine a small group of folks in Berkeley are getting invaluable experience for the future.
Stats are my main drive in RC5 tho. Nothing esoteric or noble, just fun. G4's really shine. I put mine on RC5 when SETI went to ver 3 and my times more than doubled.
I have 3 Macs running DC, 24/7:
Duallie - RC5; DSL
PM 7500/233-604e/OS 9.1 - S@H via SUM; manually connect to 'net when buffer full(10 units).
PM8500/G3-454/OS 9.1 - S@H via SUM; transport units via zip or iPod to duallie for up/down load(20 unit buffer).

Being primarily a Mac forum, you're not going to find as many DIY enthusiasts around here, though there are a few.

Macs are a bit expensive for me to consider bopping out to Circuit City, and picking one up just to crunch SETI. I'd love to have a whole wall of dualies running RC5 24/7, but my wife would rather I bought her a new car.

I agree on the Genome thing, though. I need to look over that once I get done with RC5. There are a lot of practical scientific applications for distributed computing, and I think we're barely beginning to scratch the surface. With more people getting DSL and cable modems, there's more bandwidth, and more proccessor time available every day. Really, the possibilities are endless.

I've got my brand new 1.53GHz athlon xp sitting right here waiting to start crunching.
I guess I have to build the rest of the system first
And then I've got this new dual proc board waiting for the rest of the parts, but that's the new team macnn stats server, and that box won't be built for 2 months.
Ahh, lots of comps for me

Edit: oh yeah, the current not really used team stats server is a 1.47GHz athlon xp that I built 3 wks ago

We should migrate to OS X Server, all this Athlon lovin' around here makes me queasy. Apple uses X, why can't we?

You buying?
And you going to figure out how to get all my linux stuff over to X?, cuz I sure haven't yet.

My athlons are cheaper, and they run SETI better, and, and, and
Macs for day to day use, athlons with linux for servers and pure DC machines.

I understand that this IS a Mac forum... but Understand this... AMD no matter how you look at it is cheaper and peforms better at some projects than other processors... actually i think there's a thread about this here it's DC theory at it's best.. I understand it seems absurd to buy a computer let alone not a Mac. I have to agree with scotttheking... athlons with linux mmm yummy I guess being what's called a 'farmer' (person who has lots of computers just for DC projects (explaning to lessen questions I don't think everyone's ignorant, well I am but trying to be nice)) is a total ego thing... proabbly only mostly in males and some select females....
