Just noticed the comment from Phlump... was he/were they high when they actually said this?

-
"I will be completely and absolutely shocked if the G4 can approach speeds as fast as half the speed of a comparably clocked P-iii or Athlon."

- Phlump, August 21, 2001
-

My G4/400 is running circles around my P3/700 at work with room to spare...

I know that the RC5 isn't the best indication of true computing power since the clients are optimized differently for different platforms; this was demonstrated when I installed the Linux client on a Celeron 533 and watched my rates plunge from 1.4 mkeys/sec (under Windows 2000 on the same machine) to less than 0.5 mkeys/sec...

Cheers.

Not high at all; you took me out of context. The full quote is:

Besides that realtime 3d performance, the beastly thing with Maya is the render times. I will be completely and absolutely shocked if the G4 can approach speeds as fast as half the speed of a comparably clocked P-iii or Athlon. On the other cross platform 3d package I work with (Cinema 4d) the G4's rendering performance is roughly 2x longer than a P-iii at the same clock speed. And the P-iiis and Athlons, as we all know, go to much higher clock speeds than the G4.
And I still stand by that, as newer versions of Cinema4d and Maya continue to bear this out. A G4 renders scenes in roughly twice the time of a comparably clocked P-iii. I was not talking about RC5 performance, where the Altivec optimizations in the crunch-vec core put the G4 on top.

Nice ramp by the way, guys. I guess I'll have to respond in some fashion... Good thing I still have 48 more 1.4 Athlons and 30 G4/500s to get crunching!

I have recently joined the RC5 effort, and the MacNN team. I am clipping along at a decent rate, and I still have at least one (and maybe two) machines to add to the effort. Right now I have 3 G4's going on it in their spare cycles, and I have my P3/750 thay I will add when I get some time.

Yesterday I ranked 8th overall within the team. Here are my stats for yesterday:
4,349 blocks were completed yesterday (0.00000633% of the keyspace) at a sustained rate of 13,512 KKeys/sec! Ranked 2,278 for the day.

For those with G3's and earlier, the 50K RC5 milestone is not comparable to the 50 unit SETI milestone. Accordingly, we've added a 25K milestone on RC5.

I've updated the posts here, and the Team news pages.

If you miss your own milestones, you now have a 30-day listing on the Team site here.

Just rounded the 250k corner and am heading full speed towards the 500k mark... at this rate, I will clear it just before the year rolls over!

Cheers.

The current Milestones list is:
25K, 50K, 100K, 250K, 500K, 1M, 2.5M, 5M, 10M.

I'll add code as needed in the future to catch still higher people, but at the moment no one is much past 2.5M.

[mumble]there ain't no 750 milestone...[/mumble]

Congratulations anyway.

this isn't a personal milestone, but Team MacNN is now in the Top 200 of all RC5 teams (#191 currently).

we were also ranked #21 for the day of December 6th (just that day, not overall). pretty promising.

If you look at the Team's Overall ranking, we are now ahead of Microsoft RC5 Party Team.

Yes, and we stomped ResExcellence too, at about the same time.
