Running RC5 on my firewire powerbook has caused some overheating issues.

Under OS 9, I never had any problems and the powerbook's fan never turned on -- ever. As soon as I installed OS X (about a month ago) and started running the RC5 client under X, my fan turns on periodically (I was very shocked the first time I heard it). The temperature gauge says that my CPU was consistantly between 72 and 80 C -- significantly hotter than it's normal 28-40 C range. Interestingly, if I just run the client under Darwin without GUI, the fan never turns on.

Anyway, last night I thought I had met disaster. My powerbook just shutoff (presumably from over heating) and refused to boot. The power key did absolutely nothing -- exactly what happens when you've fried your CPU (I've been there). I let it cool off for about 20 minutes, and she booted right back up again. Phew! I've decided that I'm not going to run the client on this machine anymore... (that's probably a no-brainer)

There is an option in the client settings to turn off the cruncher when the CPU reaches some defined temperature threshold -- but I'm still to wary to try it...

Anybody else had similar experiences?

Jeffrey

BTW - This has never happened on any of the dozens of desktop machines I've seen running the RC5 client over the last couple of years...

Yeah, my Ti overheats quite often while running.
I would configure it to not run if the CPU gets too hot.
While we are at it, what are good processor threshholds for the different Powerbooks.

You're using an OSX version with a GUI? I'm confused!

Sometimes, yes, sometimes no. Occationally I'll simply go into console mode and thus the window manager doesn't run -- this is the case where I'm not using a GUI, but command-line instead.
