I'm working on a FAQ for SETI and RC5. It is to be comprehensive, covering install, optimization, project info, everything. Tips and tricks are also welcome. If you have anything you'd like to contribute, please email it to sjaffa@mac.com and cc it to reader50@mac.com, or post it here.
Thx,
Scott

I know RAM disks make a HUGE difference in Seti, but i'm wondering how much of a difference they make in RC5? You don't actually need to make a RAM disk for it though, keeping blocks in memory is an option. But the amount of math done is so much simpler, is it going to make a difference? I know on 68K's its a bad idea because the amount of blocks you'd loose from a restart wouldn't equal the extra blocks you might gain, but on a Dual G4, i don't know, it might do something

I've been thinking about trying a RAM disk to see if I can up the output a little bit more. I mean, I have 1.2 gig of RAM just sitting here all night long doing nothing. At least some of it should be working! I'll give it a whirl for a few days and see if I notice any increase in output.

Yeah, about those TPS reports, didn't you get the memo?

Well I dont think it makes that big a difference in speed.
On my comp I get 1.3 Mkeys/sec with a RAM disk, my friends (identical comp) gets 1.2 without the RAM disk. (the difference could be due to other things, though)
The main reason I use a RAM disk is to allow the hard drive to spin down. Easier to go to sleep that way

If I have any tips I will post them here.
I'll do a bit of testing later today.
Oh another thing, there is a little java app called JavaVis that graphs rc5 rate (well, actually ogr,rc5 and all the others). For info, go HERE.

And the graphs look a little bit like this:
(EDIT: that top rate of 1.34 MKeys is my highest ever so far, so I'm a happy little monkey today. GO iMac GO!)

This is my graph.
I only did 6114 blocks today I did 7100 yesterday
Hopefully my rate will increase.
