My Rev.A iMac will be four years old tomorrow. Needless to say, it's getting old in the tooth. I want to replace it with a PowerMac and am tempted to go with the new low-end DP 867. I want an LCD but right now I am too cheap to shell out $600 for a lousy 15" 1024 LCD.

So, while I wait for Apple to introduce a stand-alone 17" widescreen to go with the PowerMacs, is there any way I could temporarily use my old iMac as a monitor for a new PowerMac? I remember seeing a regular display connector inside the iMac when I installed new memory.

I welcome any thoughts and suggestions (including "Escher, you're a cheap bastard").

Escher

PS: My rationale for moving up to a tower is that I would hate to throw away a perfectly good LCD with an iMac when I upgrade the next time. Because I want a perfect (but affordable) display that I can keep for a long time, I'm considering waiting for a 17" widescreen LCD.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

I don't see why it wouldn't work. You need a VGA to RGB adapter to do it. Not the kind you normally find in stores. They assume VGA monitor and a RGB Mac. You need to gender reverse of that, which Apple used to bundle with B&W G3s and older G4s.

Why not just use the iMac as an X terminal?

Are we sure the internal one is an RGB, I admit last time I saw one was in late '98 but I thought it was VGA.

VGA is RGB...

The connector is an old-style Mac video connector (DB15). If you have an HD15-to-DB15 adapter such as those included with older G4s, you can use that together with an extension cable to use the iMac as a monitor. However, you will have to do serious damage to the iMac case in order to route the cable out.

Yes, escher, you are a cheap bastard, but so am I so I understand! That said, perhaps you should consider a cheaper flat panel (for 1024x768 an analog connection is just fine, assuming the monitor is of high quality, and you set the refresh rate to 60Hz... for flat panels, higher rates in the analog signal actually reduce image quality). You might want to look at the NEC 1550V-BK, which is about $370, or the DVI version, the 1550X-BK (about $500), although again, I don't think DVI is essential for 1024x768 resolution, and if it were my money, I'd go for the 1550V-BK.
