Over at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com someone has just moded their new G4 tower with a softer fan. http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/systems/g...reduction.html

I am thinking of replacing the PSU fan in my g4. Does anyone know the specs of the fan in the PSU and the big case one.

What fans would you recomend.

I was like hoping to get some quite fans that move close to or the same amount of air as the ones aroginally in the g4 digital audio.

In the link you posted, it has the specs of the fans in question.

PS Fans : 2 x Delta fan (AFB0612EH) 6800rpm, 38 CFM, 47 dBA (60x60x25 mm)
Case Fan : Delta fan (AFB1212SHE) variable speed up to 3700rpm, up to 152 CFM, up to 53 dBA (120x120x35 mm)

I have a new DDR Gig next to me, and although it isn't menacing, it is noticeable. I too am contemplating changing the fans. The PS fans I would probably get would be the Thermaltake Volcano 6cu+. It spins at 7000 rpm and puts out 38 CFM at 39 dBA. One would have to remove the heatsink much like was described in the link at xlr8yourmac. The reason I would choose these over the slower spinning volcano 6cu or the volcano 5, is the air flow (38 versus 31). With the 6cu+, I am able to keep the same air flow but with 8 dBA less per fan. Now for the case fan, I would probably go a different route than variable speed. I would probably go with something like a sunon (KD1212PMB2-6A) (I'm guessing it is not variable speed, but I may be mistaken). It spins at 2800 rpm producing 98 CFM at 36.5 dBA. I'm not sure if this would be effective cooling, but since it would always be on, instead of the on/off on/off of the current case fan, I would guess it would be more efficient at cooling. If it is still troublesome to me in a week or so, I may do the said mods listed above.

If you do change the fans please tell me how it goes.

A G4 case can hold a lot of HOT items, so if you have done no upgrades, a much slower fan would probably be no problem.
