I own it.

600mhz harmoni
firewire
120 gig hd (7200rpm)
512 meg chip in the top slot, 128 in the bottom (soon to be 256 in bottom)
gamewizard 8 meg voodoo2
lime green case
purple apple in back (from violet iMac)
Tribal art done on the inside of the shell with adhesive black vinyl

AND...

the whole thing LIGHTS UP. I used electroluminescent wire from www.glo-wire.com and a 12v transformer with dimmer control. I mounted the controls right near all the ports, it looks almost factory. Everything is internal, and its powered from the power supply. With the flick of a switch the entire back half glows with an eery radiation looking green.

Booyah.

Now I just need an internal CD burner. Anyone have suggestions?

Yeah post a pic...I'd be interesting in seeing what the port area looks like.

Where did you get the 512MB module?

And while the MCE drive is the only one sold now, once in a blue moon you might come across an old PowerCD iMac drive on eBay.

Anyone know of any faster notebook CDRs??! Im not paying 200 dollars for a 16x drive, thats just lame.

Also, the 60 dollar UDJMAA matsushita one isn't bootable, so thats a no-no.

http://pcnuben.tripod.com/pcnucomputers.htm

I made their Sony CRX 700e (8x4x32 for 69.99) bootable by soldering a jumper on that board that goes behind the drive. It's a notebook with a black face. I couldn't stand the look of it anymore so I grafted the tray from my Techworks Power CDR onto the insides of the CRX 700e, creating a Frankenstein drive that looks good on the outside.

Here is what my Apple System profilier looks like with this modification made to the board:

http://home.attbi.com/~hartnoise/ATA_bus.jpg

There is only one drive connected to the ATA bus even though it looks like there is two. As you can see, I have a CD in and it only mounts once. The second drive image is a phantom. This drive works perfectly and boots with no problem. Making this jumper on the board should allow any notebook CD drive to be bootable, but I'm not making any guarantees. If anybody is interested in doing this, I'll find out or try to remember what two pins I jumpered.

What drive were you asking about, imaxxedout?

I believe that there are links above to both the MCE drive and the Sony drive I wrote about.

Hmm. I'd rather have a combo DVD-CD drive
in my iMac. If I want to burn, there's always the firewire port. The Sonnet firewire card is sweet..

Know where I can find any voodoo mezzanine cards?? Would it help with DVD playback?

I also have the floppy drive hack on my machine, thanks c't

If only there was an Airport Hack, the Rev ABCD iMacs could really use a wireless option to make them more portable.

My other planned hack.. replacing one of the USB ports with an internal hub and installing a wireless keyboard and mouse and possibly an 802.11 interface inside the shell.

Hmm, know of any USB - 802.11 gadgets that will work with MacOS9, X ? I'd like to
integrate it into the iMac shell. Keep things clean and all..

I figure hiding a 4 port USB hub under the motherboard should be no problem, then I can stick the wireless mouse board under the removable plastic under the CPU module. The 802.11 is going to have to go up on top somewhere for better propagation.

I was on the iMac Rev. A before, dropped a 500MHz card w/FireWire, Formac iProTVRAID card, WD 1200JB HD, 256MB RAM, 6MB SGRAM. Too bad, DVD won't playback on any ATi RAGE on-board Mac, unless running VLC or DVDBackup to the hard drive; second no mezzanine support under OS X, so an ultimate 1st gen iMac can run upto 9.2.2!?

Of course, the build-in CDRW is cool.

You want the MacSense AeroPad.

MacSense

I found this the other day on MacNN news page. I think it runs for around $100.

OK... so how do you get a 120GB drive in there-I thought the bus limited the capacity...

My specs on my rev. A bondi blue iMac (the real first gen)
-256mb ram (looking for that 512 you mentioned)
-466 mhz iMaxpower upgrade (REALLY interested in the HARMONI-trying to find reviews of it)
-voodoo 2
-40 gb maxtor HD

how does bus limit capacity? it's the controller prolly that limits it... Unless you were referring to the fact that there's no room for another HD... first generations (A-D) of iMac had 2 separate IDE busses, both of which could accommodate 2 devices (the CD bus was/is tricky...) and if you do a search in xlr8yourmac.com's drive compatibility database, you will find at least one report of 120GB HD in 333MHz tray-loading iMac. The key is to partition the disk so that the boot partition is weel _inside the first eight gigabytes_, like 7GB for boot, rest as you need...

Well, I know all about the 8 GB thing... I have 40GB HD... I was under the impression that the ATA 33 bus limited it to a certain capacity (more than transfer speed)... BUT if that isn't true.... Shoot...

Nope, just the restriction of 120GB. I've got a 120GB Maxtor in my Blueberry slot loader and it works fine.

OK... so If I buy a 120 gb HD from western digital or whomever... as LONG AS it is EIDE (whether it is ata 100/133/66 etc) it will work right? I'm pretty sure the Rev. A iMac that I have only has ata33 capabilities.

Sorry guys, haven't been in this section for a while. I'll try to get pics of it once I'm at my new apt, especially when it is lit up. And yeah, 120 gigs is no problem, just make sure you partition the HD so the first section is under 8 gigs. Just to be safe I made two 3 gig partitions.

Sorry man. I will have a parts iMac available soon. 233mhz G3 with a rev D mobo (my old board).

I'm planning on swapping the mezz connector onto the Rev D card so I can get a faster 2d card.

I remember Micro Conversions would do a whole package for you back in the day. If you sent your iMac into them, they would overclock it to 266 mhz, install the gamewizard, solder in a firewire port, and also set up the audio so you could use both the internal speakers with external ones simotaniously. To bad i've never seen one with that sweet "hacked" package.

Almost. They didn't offer a firewire port....they overclocked your chip, installed a mezz slot if you didn't have one, and somehow modded the speakers so if you hooked up a sub, the front iMac speakers would still work for clarity.

So, was it ever decided that there WAS a 512 chip that works in the iMac 233 or no?

I don't think so. There was one guy who 'claimed' to get a 512 chip to work, but he was a newb and he never responded to how he got it to work, so I don't think so. Right now I have a 512 chip stuck in it and, yep, it only recognizes as 256. Luckily I have another 256megs in the other slot.

The Firewire uses the CPU card. It's an arm that extends out from the card over to the side. The port ends up being at the top right hand side of the I/O panel.

The Mezzanine slot has nothing to do with the Firewire port,....only the VooDoo II Card.

Maybe I'm way off "Base", lol, but couldn't you adapt Ethernet to Airport by plugging in a spare Airport Basestation Ethernet snow or extreme into your ethernet on your Mac, and the last two have a passthrough for the Ehternet I think on them. I know the base stations can also act as repeaters, so logically, couldn't it also send the connection back to another Mac over the Ethernet on a second base station? I think Linksys may also have an adaptor that might work for pulling 802.11b by ethernet.
