Alright, I threw my OLD hd into my performa, but it wouldn't boot up. My old HD had 4 partitions: 1 was OS9.2, one was OSX, and hte other two were for hotline and applications respectively.

Anyway, it starts to boot into 9 but then says "This cannot run on this computer".

WTF not?!?!

So I installed 7.6 on one of the other drives. It boots. I tried installing 8.6 over the top of 7.6.. every time I try to run the installer it says "This installer can not run on this computer, see documentation for details".

Alright, I've read EVERYTHING, and I can't figure it out.

ALSO, one final thing of weirdness: I stuck a 12 gig HD in it that has 8.6 on it and it runs FINE.

Any ideas?!?!

Just an idea: Maybe the partitions are too big to be detected by the IDE (i think these machines made the transition away from SCSI)controler???!?

Are you trying to use the 8.6 install CD that came with another computer (like an iMac)? Because that won't work. You need to buy the retail version of 8.x and up to get it to install on a 6400. The 6400 can't officially run anything newer than 9.1.

No. See, the 12 gig I previous had in it was also 8.6... but it ran fine. And yes, the CD is for an iMac... but I don't think that should matter, as like I said, the previous 12 gig was from my iMac also.

It does matter. The iMac install cd is customised for the iMac and Apple have decided to prevent use on any mac with a different Machine ID. You may be able to delve into the installer folders and find an unmodified system installer; I was able to do this on my beige G3 CD with OS 8.

Failing this you could use TomeViewer to extract the OS files from the installation tomes.
