We've got a spare iMac 266 that I sometimes use to test out new apps on or use as a spare.

I was trying to take off the daughtercard assembly to access the underside RAM slot when I accidently scraped off a soldering point on the board...

Too bad. I was going to install Jaguar on it for my first taste of OS X...

Do you think this can be fixed by a competent Mac hardware tech ?

I don't even know the terminology to describe what I damaged.
It was on the large green circuit board that is part of the chassis, not the samller area that holds the RAM and processor.

what got scraped off? did you scrap off a component from the top? Or just metallic solder from the bottom? If you removed a component, then that would be harder to fix, but possible, you'd just need to find someone who is comfortable working with SO form factor parts. If you just scrapped off metallic solder from the bottom, someone could theoretically just resolder, and you'd be fine. This probably isn't a job for a mac tech, they probably never solder anything, this is a job for an electronics hobbiest, someone who can work with small outline parts instead of just saying 'uh, you have to replace that'.

If you could post a picture of the damage, that would help!

peace,

It wasa tiny little thing. It's gone now. Idon't know if it was just to connect a circuit or of it was actually a diode or something. The location is labeled as C51.

I couldn't get a clear pic but I did get one that shows the general location.

I've got one of those mbs at home I can look at and find out what it is. Problaby a resistor or something. Maybe even a jumper which would be easy to fix.

That would be great!

The machine does start-up but I haven't tested it fully. If it's something for the modem or audio I might be ableto get by without it.

I looked at mine and it is just a little brown thing with no markings, since its C51 its probably is a capacitor. A surface mount capacitor and I have no idea how you get a replacement.

Thanks for checking on that.
I don't know any thing about electronics - do you think it would be unsafe to try to run the machine?

I've decided to risk it! I'm in the process of installing OS X on it right now! It's normal for it to smoke when running Jaguar isn't it...

Considering I'm also in Hell (Pittsburgh) the fiery iMac should be right at home!

I say start it up- what's the worst that could happen? It's just sitting there now not doing anything.

If you're really freaked out about it ease your mind by selling it to me.
