Hi,

i just wanted to post some info about a combo drive swap in my iBook 700.

I wanted faster burning so I found a 16x Sony CRX-810E on eBay. It's a high speed drive so it's a bit noisier on some discs that are slightly out of "round" but I'm happy overall.

Most combo or CDRW drives made in recent years use the same connector and have the same or nearly identical physical dimensions. There are a bevy of choices out there.

The only downside is that I had to glue on the faceplate as the mountings are different than the stock Toshiba unit.

I hacked a device plugin to enable support in iTunes and discburner. Toast works with it out of the box. DVD's play great too.

If anyone wants a decent "how-to", check this one out Here

Good job! It's too bad the ibook is such a b*tch to take apart.

How about it being bootable?

The drive is definitely bootable.

The only real difference seems to be that it's much faster.
