Apple still has yet to release an 802.11a card and its a shame that no other developers have filled in the gap
802.11a is much faster and more reliable than 802.11b
So can anyone come up with a way to fit a 3rd party 802.11a card in the internal slot of an iBook 800?

Not without some serious cutting of the iBook. Most external cards come with built in antennaes. The internal airport cards don't have antennaes and need to connect to the internal pigtail. So until apple comes out with a solution, we will wait for the iBook. For the Powerbook, just insert a card and find the drivers. Now will apple go with 802.11a or 802.11g?

Yes unfortunately they are. I would really like to see an 802.11a card for my powerbook that supports OS X, but I have not been able to find one.

I don't know about OS X support, but I do know there are Mac compatible 802.11a cards out there. But it would really be simplest to wait for Apple to come out with Airport 2. I can't imagine that it would be that long (although we are talking about Apple here...)

thats what i was thinking
but the catch is that apple just updated the iBooks and Powerbooks
if apple were to come out with 802.11a then they probably would have with those revisions
wont apple have to switch to 802.11a eventually if they want to incorporate bluetooth into their hardware?
802.11a + Bluetooth card is needed and would be sweet

Sweet indeed! I've been experiencing AirPort interference, presumably from a neighbor's 2.4Ghz phone, and desperately want to move up to 5Ghz technology. I'm also looking forward to a new smartphone that can sync seamlessly with my OS X apps over Bluetooth.

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

they're going with g....backwards compatible with 11b base-stations and all you need is a gCard. The release date is this summer.

You seem to know alot about the subject... Will apple be introducing bluetooth soon? How about a 5ghz+ Pentium 4?
Just checking

There's a reason Apple didn't jump on 802.11a.
"It's FASTER than 802.11b! But sadly it doesn't work with b.. So we're gonna go with 802.11g which DOES work with 802.11b. 802.11a is doomed to fail."
Not an actual quote but the jist of what Apple said.
If you need 802.11a, you better have a real reason for needing it.

11g is still on 2.4 range so it is still intercept with bluetooth. Been there done that so that is a VERY good reason for 11a !!!! Have anyone heard about 11a improve version called 11e ?
George.

To get back to the main topic:
If you were able to find a 802.11a card that works in the iBooks slot, you'd have to use external antennas since 802.11a uses a different wavelength than 802.11b.

Stink different.
