I was wondering if this was possible. Since I hate the trackpad so much, I was thinking that a character LCD display might go nicely there if it was small and flush enough. Anyone know of any OS X & USB-compatible character LCD's, or any software that will make this work? I'm willing to sacrifice a USB port for this.

Yes, the trackpad is around 1mm thick, so there isn't much chance of getting an LCD there, but what exactly is a character LCD?

A character LCD is a little LCD, normally about 2.5" long and 1" high or such.

They are indeed usually too fat, there are some alternatives like OLEDs and such, but the hardware to drive them requires too much space.

Sorry, this sounds like a *shrug* to me

I think he means an LCD like the ones, which are built into the casings of big workstation like the HP kajaks and so on (displaying system diagnosis etc.)
