Did this earlier today. I stripped the paint and put a printout of a Roy Lichtenstein picture under the lid.
EDIT: My image host is limiting my views. See what I've done so far at this geocities site if the image link is broken.
I'm going to try to do the back too.
Does anyone know how to make a picture stick between the battery and the piece of plastic that covers it?
Would I need special glue to keep the transparency?

I would think you would want to print the picture on heavy paper ( or maybe glue it to some card stock or something) and then use a transparent glue to glue it to the inside of the battery cover. Then glue the cover back on the battery. It probably wouldn't be a very strong bond though. Tricky.

This is an absolutely great mod, n~s. It's the first iBook mod that is tempting me. Much better than the dime-a-dozen single-color mods.
I love Roy Lichtenstein. I love my iBook. How could I not love the combination of the two?

Until we get a 3 lbs sub-PowerBook, the 12-inch PowerBook will do.

That's a very cool mod! I can't wait to do something like this--as soon as my 'Book gets here!
Some questions:
- Did you glue the picture inside the lid, or just tape it there?
- Are the inside corners of the lid rounded or square?
- How did you get the image to fit properly?
- What about the Apple logo...
I really like how the artwork looks like part of the case, that is, the computer's not just a "pictureframe" for the pic.
Anyhow, great mod!

Thanks for the kind words everyone.
immsav, you can find a good how-to-guide here:
http://www.applefritter.com/hacks/chameleon/index.html
To answer your questions:
1. The picture is neither taped nor glued. It's actually a pretty snug fit in between the outside of the screen and inside of the cover. The plastic apple and four screws in the cover keep it from sliding.
2. The inside corners are rounded. I worked around this by making a small cut at a 45 degree angle at each of the corners . There's some overlap when you push the image into place, but the cut helps keep things neat and you can trim what does not show.
3. I measured out the cover and printed on two sheets of glossy paper. I printed a draft copy first to see how it would fit. You'll probably need to trim the edges a bit and cut out a place for the apple before screwing the lid back on.
4. The apple logo is a clear piece of plastic. When you get the cover off, you'll see a thin white sheet of plastic that diffuses the light coming off the back of the screen. I replaced the thin plastic with a red sheet of vellium, and put the clear plastic logo over the vellium, but under the picture (that has an apple logo cut out of the middle).
I don't know if this will work with a brand new iBook, I think Apple might have stopped using the painted transparent plastic that they used to (Can someone confirm?). Mine is a 500 Mhz model.
Anyway, I'm leaving the bottom transparent for now since I can't find an adhesive that will play nice with both printed paper and clear plastic.
