I'm thinking of upgrading one of the G4-400 Yosemite's in my design studio to a G4-800 or 1Ghz. And I'm wondering if I can take the G4-400 ZIF from the old machine and use it in a beige G3? Anyone do this? Is this the same thing as getting a G4-400 upgrade ZIF from Powerlogix, or NewerTechnology?

If it is a ZIF than yes, you can take it from your G4 to your beige G3. But you might have some trouble finding some G4 800Mhz or 1Ghz ZIFs. The number one resson is because they don't exist. I think the fastest G4 ZIF is at 550Mhz. You can get a G3 at 800Mhz for it (I believe) Are you sure that your computer has ZIFs and not AGP?

from what i understood, agp refers to 'advanced graphics port' and is completely separate from the processor.

Yosemite = B&W G3. There are no G4 upgrades above 550 for it. This also includes the short lived Yikes model, which I don't think existed at 400MHz.
Assuming that you have a G4, no, you cannot put that card in a G3, it's not a ZIF.
If it's a B&W G3, yes, you can put the proc in, but it will run at 266 unless you can change the multiplier on the processor, and there will not be a G4 upgrade for it, only G3.

1 GHz, coming soon, and only for beige G3s!!! 9 more days, I can't wait!!! Looks like it comes with some serious fans though... Maybe time to look into a liquid cooling system for my baby. I'm planning one getting these bad boys and one of those nifty Tempo cards. It has an ATA/133 controller for 4 drives at 137GB+, 2 Firewire ports and 2 USB 1.1/2.0 ports, all on one card.

If I remember correctly the Yikes models started at 400Mhz and then when Motorla couldn't deliver 500Mhz cpu's, the Yikes was then lowered to G4/350's, but some G4/400's had already been shipped.
