I can't comment on overclocking an iMac [a Beige G3 233 is a diffrent story], but I have the same iMac/Memory and recently loaded OS X. I have been very pleased and have run in to no difficulties. I have weened myself off of OS 9 completely in about 3 weeks time. This is the fastest machine I have, so "is it Laggy" - I have no clue other than I have not been disappointed in the least.

I installed OS X on my iMac (see my sig for the specs) about a year ago, then recently ugpraded to Jaguar. I found the overall speed pretty OK. It's smooth and very usable..So I didn't find it slow at all until I got my new Tibook...Big difference..But well the spec of those two machine are not comparable...anyway just install 10.2 and you'll be happy...

You could probably hit 450 without any trouble, 500 to 550 if you use proper cooling. Although, not many iMac DVs were ever overclocked, so it's tough to say (550MHz would likely require water cooling).

Water Cooling? How would that be done? If at all?

Just a couple of links to give you an idea what water cooling is. It is very difficult to install, this coming from a second-hand report (I have never tried it myself). Plus, it's fairly expensive.

However, if done correctly, 550MHz doesn't seem out of the question to me. And, a jump from 400 to 550MHz could add some life to an iMac (and possibly save some money over a new iMac purchase).

I'm actually tempted to try it on my own iMac DV 400.

EDIT: http://www.tomshardware.com/howto/20030224/index.html This was a cool article at Tom's Hardware Guides about VapoChill and some insane overclocking. However, due to the iMac's soldered processor, this may not even be possible.

Pssht.

www.innovatek.de is the best place for overclocking kits. The only thing is you'd need some sort of thermal adhesive (plus you'd have to use a GPU waterblock) to get that to work.

Now those are nice cooling solutions [ drools].

When I pick up a new iMac, I'll have to overclock my old iMac DV 400 with one of these cooling systems. Yowzah.
