It should work, do you want to replace the drive or do you want to add it as a 2nd drive? (if it's a 2nd drive it depends if you have a rev one or rev 2)

I am new to this realm, hell it's my first post...
1) Could you do this to a iBook, if it was a IBM laptop HD?
2) Is there a document of some sort to install the new HD, format it, and install OS X (I guess a recovery disk) to get it rolling?

It's really quite easy :
a) put in your new (almost) drive as slave and make sure your 4 Gig jumper is defined as master.
b) connect the ide cable and power cable to the 2 drives.
c) start the computer.
d) use apple disk utility (comes with OS X) to format the new drive. Don't bother partitioning it unless you want a small partition for OS 9.
e) get CCC (carbon copy cloner) from VersionTracker and use it to copy your OS X system and other data from the 4 gig to the new drive.
f) from system preferences, run Startup Preference and select your new OS X (on the new drive).
g) restart. You should now have OSX running from the new drive.
Enjoy a well done job...
You can keep both drives in the G3 and just keep the 4 gig as a OS X backup if ever something goes wrong with your new system.
If you get rid of the 4 gig, please think of me :-) and more importantly, you will have to remove the slave jumper on your 20 gig and put it in CS (cable select position) or don't put it back at all (single position). I am not sure about CS with an old G3 but you may give it a try.
Good luck!
Louis
