I just make the switch from the PC world (linux and Unix for PC, not windows)..

I just love my ibook, its great and the BSD roots makes me feel like in home.

But i wonder if its posible to overclock my ibook 600 to something more (800 or 700 ?).

BTW. im also thinking about changing the 15 GB hd to something bigger (what brand model do you recomend ?)

Also. this machine has only one memory socket but the apple memory its really expensive and hard to find here in mexico, there its some other brand of memory that i can use (i wish 512 mb).

Thanks for all your help to this switcher.

Well, this post really belongs in the iBook forum, but i guess this'll do. The RAM is any PC100 Sodimm. (A 512mb is $100-125USD). The overclock is debatable, I had a 500mhz that I overclocked to 600mhz, but I think the main gains I got were the bus speed (66mhz VS. 100mhz). A 600-700 probably wouldn't have that much of a gain.

how did you overclock a 500 to a 600? better yet how did you get it change to 100mhz bus speed?

a friend has a 500 ibook he is selling but i want at least a 100mhz bus. you can email instructions if you like sonny@xiola.org
as ever,

dude it is not easy and I would not sugest it! If your considering buying a ibook buy a newer one! Even overclocked to 600/100 the older ibook is much slower than the newerones with 512k of L2 and a Radeon video chip.

The risk is to high to take expecially considering you don't even own it. Buy a better one.. it's just that simple.

Also reguarding the 600 to 700 overclock.. also don't do it.. not worth it.

here's the link for the 500mhz overclock:
link

I've overclocked my ibook 500, and its not too bad IF you've had experience with soldering, and you're patient. One slight screw up can render your ibook useless. A good soldering iron helps too.

And I believe some of the newer ones can be overclocked via software.
