bah. i got a dvd drive for my ibook, expecting it to ultimatize my totally chopped up blueberry baby.
the thing works, as far as reading dvds goes, but the ibook's door dosent fit so theres a big hole, plus it wont play dvds! it wont ******* play dvds! osx's dvd player dosent support the ragepro, and videolan skips! the best its good for is watching stills. and why is limp bizkit on my playlist! die!
anyone else botch a hack?

Not yet, but I'm working on it.
My 8100 Micro Hack (PowerMac 8100 in a IIci case) keeps shorting out unexpectedly. I'm afraid one of the sudden shorttages will blow something out. Gotta fiddle with it.
The only other Hack I did was the K'nexintosh 8100 which wasn't botched. But the IIci version I made before it was a complete disaster. (The case, I mean.)
Other than that, no.. no other botches.

But then I'd be going slower! Actually, both those Hacks were the same 8100. And it's an 8100/100 that I bought off of the MacOSX.com administrator. It only shorts out when I lay the IIci case down normally. It's meant to actually sit on the site like a Tower (Think the Quadra 700) and when laying down the PSU seems to slide a bit once in a while and tap a circuit on the MoBo I guess and short it out. Thankfully it's a lower power part hitting the board and not part that hasn't been become lower voltage yet. Can you say "POOF!"
But I'll keep ya in mind. Thanks.

I managed to destroy my BlueTooth adaptor while trying to integrate it into my keyboard.
Doesn't quite compare to your DVD drive though....

Hmm, a little research would've shown that the Rage Pro won't do software DVDs, oh well, live and learn
The closest I've come to botching a hack was when I tried to build my own case out of wood for a Duo 2300c/dock combination. (Out of spare parts)
It was just sitting in a trader joes bag until a while ago, I think I just threw it out.

if my ibook was just a tad bit faster, it would probably work beautifully. i havent tried it in os 9 yet. it may work fine there, or in linux, havent tried linux either.
but its annoying! bah. stupid lack of drivers.

I don't think it's the speed of the processor, but the Rage Pro chipset, which prevents it from working. The Rage pro simply doesn't support DVD playback, thats why the Indigo iBooks (With the Rage128 Mob) would work fine.
Just look for a 366 or 466 MoBo somewhere and swap it in

I was checking drive compatibility reports at xlr8yourmac.com trying to find a cdrw drive to buy and stumbled across this
Reviewer's Name: Jack Benner
Date Submitted: 9/12/2002
Drive Type: DVD-ROM
Drive Interface: IDE
Drive Brand: Matshita
Drive Model Number: 6X
Driver Used: Apple Standard
Mac Model: Apple iBook
Mac OS Version: OS X
Reader Comments: DVD-ROM was bootable in OS9 and OS X 10.2. This is a Blueberry 300 MHz iBook (bought at Sears on Day 1). Currently with 288 Mb RAM.
DVD was recognized and mounted discs in both 9 and X but DVD Player (2.7 and 3.11) would not play DVD. Applied all the available hacks which didn't help. Downloaded vlc from www.videolan.org and did a simple drag install. vlc works great in full-screen mode. Plays all the DVD's I tried -Toy Story , Wiz of OZ, 5th Element. Some jerky frames but hey it works. Got drive from wegenermedia.com
Mike Comments: As noted since the first version of the DVD 2.x and later players (OS 9 2.x and OS X 3.x) - they require a Rage128 or later graphics chip - your older ATI graphics chip isn't supported by any of the Apple DVD players.
For a previous article on non-apple OS X DVD players (Videolan and mplayer) - see the www.xlr8yourmac.com Misc/OS topics page.
(Posted May 2002 - Non-Apple OS X DVD Players)
looks like maybe dvd works on a blueberry.

anyone else botch a hack? [/B]
Hey sine (remember me? we met in TO and I sold you the Newton... ). I have a botched hack story to tell.
I had an old Duo 2300 lying around that I was using as a NAS (network attached storage) device for backups of small important files, as it only had a ~700MB HD. I had the Duo located in a bookshelf and I thought that it would be cool if I could turn the Powerbook into a real book to match the others in my book case. So I took it apart and had it all set up to go into my hollowed out book. I settled the powerbook in its spot and booted it and removed the LCD display (via a small connector). I needed to check something out on the screen so I re-attached the LCD... backwards.... Pfzzzit! went the display and mobo.
here is the pic before it died.

LOL!
I would think anime would be the *least* problematic thing to watch with dropped frames.
