I just replaced my stock 10gig HD for my Pismo 400 with a Toshiba 40gig 5400rpm 16mb buffer (model number MK4019GAX). It has speeded us OS X very very nicely and I am happy with the extra space (but not about losing 8gig to OS 9, argh).

Problem: The hard drive constantly makes this LOUD and ANNOYING clicking. It occurs whenever I do anything remotely processor intensive. While copying mp3s from a CD, it clicked nonstop. AHhh!!! Make it stop!!!

Is this normal? If it is I am sending it back and getting something that is silent!! I will say that the machine is silent whenever it is just sitting there doing nothing...much quieter than the stock 10gig.

Anyone?

Loud clicking noise is not normal, especially when you bought a new one. Normally the HD dies shortly after these first symptoms. Get it back and have it exchanged!

I agree with euphras about returning the drive.

Wow, a 16 MB cache. I've never seen such a large cache before, and being a little skeptical I checked Toshiba's site. Neat!
