What are my options for upgrading a beige G3? I thought I read somewhere that you can only go as high as 500 MHz for ZIF's for some reason. I did the math however, and 66 MHz X 10 = 666MHz. I looked a little further and it looks like the board only supports a 7X multiplier, which puts you at a mere 466 MHz. You can OC the bus, but does this work? I remember when the first G4s came out, how hard it was to get them to 500 MHz, will a G4 ZIF OC much higher than 500? I read somewhere that someone had a 600 MHz Powerlogix ZIF upgrade, yet I couldn't find any such upgrade on thier site. Also, can you still get those ZIF MP things anywhere? The ZIF sockets that have two more sockets built in, so you can use regular ZIF modules to create dual G4 machines?

700 and 800 MHz G3 ziff upgrades are available for Beige G3 systems (as well as others) from powerlogix. You can check their web site, as well as OWC for info. Alsoxlr8yourmac has a right up on the upgrades.

re:
>>, will a G4 ZIF OC much higher than 500?<<<

Some will, some won't. The one I got from OWC was rated at 533/beige or 550/B&W. I have been running it at 650 for several months now ( after about a week of burn-in)

Works 4 me

re:
>>why cant they make a ZIF >500 ?<<

suposedly because of the pinouts being so much different on the zif based machines and the later ones....???

Personally, I think it's a marketing ploy to get us to just shell out the moolah for a new tower instead of upgrading. Remember how apple snuck in the G3-G4 upgrade block for the B&W towers....telling everyone it was a simple firmware patch.....only to find out later what they had really done, huuummmm.......

And then, SUDDENLY, about a year later, the upgrade makers pulled a miracle out of their collective butts and un-did the block, so they could start selling more upgrades again......huuummmm

seems like a conspiracy to me
