I think abaout the following to get an external superdrive to my cube and run iDVD:
1)Remove the internal harddrive and use uit as an external FireWireDrive - no probs
2)connect an OXFORD Bridge to the internal IDE PORT now free
3)Put an Firewirecable on it and connect it outside
4) to an external Pioneer "Superdrive" hostet in an 5,25" FireWireCase

Will that work or is it not possible to vonvert from IDE to FIREWIRE and Back again ? What will the Cube recognize ? IDE and a superdrive - would by perfect - or would it be irritated by the multiple transformations ?

Any ideas ?

look at this:

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=156500

this guy put an external IDE superdrive on his cube. i think that's your best bet. although i've never tried converting the IDE to fw to IDE again, i'm guessing that whatever drive is at the end won't be recognized as an IDE (meaning that it won't be recognized by iDVD).

THAT'S SO FUNNY!

sorry, tk, you cannot know, but:

heiko_ka and i know each other from a german forum; he posted there his question 'bout his idea ide-firewire-ide converting; i gave him the clue, to try his question here, 'cause this forum is very good in answering technical questions even i do understand the answer.

now, you give him the tipp to ask me

well, the iNet IS indeed a worldwide community!

heiko, kannst mich also auch direkt im macnews.fourm noch mal fragen ;-))

btw: some other guy told us, that a ide-fw-ide converting doen's work

any one a clue 'bout ide-switchers (they DO exist)?

I think this will work as the Oxford bridge chipset as my understanding of it is a bi-directional device. Not all firewire controllers are bi-directional, so I figure using the chipset from an external firewire case would work.

sure it is bidrectional - you can construct fiorewire chains with many devices, all have to "communicate" with each ohter and the computer.

question was. will the cube accept an oxford chip as an "internal" device?

we CUBEists try to construct some cheap way to get a superdrive + iDVD running. my way was, to use the internal ide cable which is normally in use with the cd/dvd drive.

the idea of heiko now is, to implement a second firewire chain inside the cube, connected to the ide-controller! (ok, a lilttle scary - but, some guys told us, the ide controller will NOT accept an oxford chips as a "ide device"; on the other hand, guys like say correctly, firewire IS bi-directional)
