Hope this is the right forum.

I'm looking to eek some more speed out of my G4/500 Sawtooth (GigaDesigns 1.2GHz upgrade card). I have an 80GB Western Digital SE (8MB Cache) and an 30GB IBM, both are ATA/100. I'm wondering if it's worth it to get an ATA/100 controller for them. Will I be able to perceive a difference? Are the controllers more trouble than they are worth (as far as bugs and incompatibilities go)?

I'm also wanting to put my stock drive back in my computer. Is this possible with an added ATA controller? Would I be able to put the 3rd drive on the built in ATA/66 bus, or are there enough connections on the card for 3?

Thanks for any info.

I have an ata/66 pci card which I had in my powermac g4/400 gigabit ethernet machine.

Between the four hard drives, superdrive, and gigadesigns 1.25ghz processor, the poor power supply didn't have enough power to handle it all, and the drives would lose data occasionally.

I have since removed that card and placed the extra drives in firewire enclosures with their own power supplies.

MUCH BETTER.

anyone wanna buy a ata/66 card?
If this post is in the Lounge forum, it is likely to be my own opinion, and not representative of the position of MacNN.com.

Very interesting. I don't want to lose data. And I am just now replacing my power supply because of a faulty fan. My original plan was to get a firewire enclosure for my stock hard drive. Then I thought I'd like to eliminate that external device, but maybe I should reconsider the importance of that.

Thanks for the info.

I went through this last fall when I built my video editing machine.
I'm running a Quicksilver Dual 800, I have 5 hard drives in it, a zip 250 and a Superdrive. I also put in an extra PCI Slot fan to cool things down, the AGP graphics card, a PCI ATI card, and 2 ATA/133 PCI cards (one RAID, one normal)
I've had no power issues at all. Most of the drives are on Y power splitters too.
You need to check the size of your powersupply though.
