So, I got meself 500MHz processor card to replace the old 350MHz one, and noticed that temps rose some 8 degrees celsius (I know, estimate +-12 C) and I'd like to get it to run a bit cooler...

Here's what I'm considering:
1. swap the 120mm fan -> suggestions for better airflow and less noise?
2. lap the heatsink -> I have 240, 500 and 1000 grit watersanding paper, these will be sufficient from what I've gathered, but how about thermal goop? Is silver paste (Arctic Silver or other brand) suggested? I've seen Tycho advice against it due to electrical connectivity...

how are you getting temp readings? via software? i don't trust soft temp readings.

lapping the sink might help...but seriously, how much will it help? it's not like your sawtooth is running hot, or anything. i have a 450 that i keep on days at a time, looking at some temp utilities (like in cache control X), i routinely get 30deg C. and i'm sure i don't have the best air flow, with 5 hd's and all those IDE cables.

tr, yes, via software, and it's running at 44C while 350MHz was 32C...
so when compared to you, even my 350 was hotter... thus I'd like to replace the fans

Where do you put this Silvery colored gooo? I have a G4 450 AGP SAWTOOTH and I am about to install a Western Digital WD800JB in it. I am also wondering...although it is off the subject...if I should use the new har drive as my main hd and make the 10 gig one I have now the slave...?

Danke, Steven

NYC7 - You put an eeeeeensy bit on the core of the processor before putting the heat sink back, about half the size of a pea. Less is more And yes, make the new drive the main boot drive - its a bunch faster. I Got a new western digital 80 gig 8 meg cache and it's great. For cooling reasons - i got a different IDE cable so I could put the drives side by side instead of stacked......
