I want a cheap SuperDrive-equipped machine, and outside of finding a cheap PowerMac on eBay, I have the option of ripping apart an eMac and putting it into an ATX case.

Should I follow a guide to converting an iMac to ATX if I indeed go this route?

Why not just add a firewire superdrive to the eMac? It will be a hell of a lot simpler and you get to have two optical drives.

Buy an internal DVD burner and an inexpensive case and you are set.

my $0.02

besides if you're going through go through this sort of operation you can always just swap the internal CD drive with a dvd burner. (pioneer a05 maybe?)

No big deal.

Well, for one thing, I want to use my 19" LCD display with whatever I buy. I suppose I should have mentioned that.

That's why I'd take apart the eMac and probably convert it into a monitor/speaker combo and take the guts and throw them into a cheap ATX case. Then I could still use the eMac monitor if I ever needed to (plus, it'd be sort of fun to try).

I'm guessing, however, that the eBay route will likely be the most fruitful, since I could probably find a dual-867 with Superdrive for not much more than an eMac with a SuperDrive. In fact, I had a dual-1GHz PowerMac with SuperDrive just last week, but it had to be returned because of a faulty second processor.

Too bad you couldn't hack the eMac for video out and attach another monitor. Duallies are sweet.

Good luck
