I've got a functioning (sorta) iMac DV SE - CRT only functions intermittantly...

So here's the plan:

Crack the case
Pull the crt
Discard the upper shell
Insert plexiglas sheet over now-open top of iMac
Plug in monitor via VGA port

So, my question is, how the bloody hell to I safely crack the case & pull the tube?

Don't try to outweird me, I get stranger things than you free with my breakfast cereal.

Use a screwdriver and undue the screws under the case and start pealing off layers. It shouldn't be all that difficult.

Just my 2¢

Just remember there's an incredible charge stored in the internals. I don't know how this process would work but I do know you can f-yourself up pretty badly if you touch the wrong capacitators.

Maybe there's an article at http://www.applefritters.com that could help you...

You need this:
iMac DV SE Service Manual.

It's a PDF so if you want to download it, right click and "save as" or "download link to disk" otherwise it should open in your browser.

Have fun

There is actually quite a bit to it, the DVs won't boot without the internal monitor attached, or a serious mod:

Someone walk me though this... so even if we can come up with a ATX converter it won't boot without the original CRT plugged into it? Will we get any power going at all to verify there is juice flowing.. like maybe the hard drive spinning up? Is this situation unique to the modified power supply or is this true of the original one as well if the CRT was not attached?

No it will boot once a proper adapter is made the problem is a large part of the power supply is held by the CRT control board and so the power outputs by this (nonstandard as always) gotta be emulated.

Made as in make-shift? Or is this something that can be bought?
And without one is it still possible to know if power is flowing when no CRT is in place.. by the HD spinning up or something?

Not that I know of.

For a PC ATX power supply you have to have at least the motherboard and display adapter attached, or the power supply will not power up the leads. Its on, you can still shock yourself if you touch the wrong bit, but no devices will run off of it. I would assume the iMac power supply is the same way.
