Hey all-

I haven't yet tried my hand at mods, but I was discussing changing my Wallstreet G3 PBook into a digital/airport picture frame in this thread. I decided that the pbook is still too useful, especially as an internet access point in our guest room.

BUT, I have this old color classic in a box, that has done NOTHING in 3 years - I think its time to mod.

I tried booting it about a year ago, and got a flashing disk, tried to reinstall the software, and my install disks are no good. I know apple released 7.5 into the wild, and I have seen the MANY color classic upgrade sites, but I don't necessarily want to upgrade it to use as a faster mac - I want new functionality - digital picture box, recipe book, etc etc etc.....

I assume I would want to test out the OS again, HD etc, and make sure everything WORKS, and an ethernet card would help a lot.

But here's where you all come in - I have a computer, and some cash, and here's a chance for to all mod vicariously through me -

What can we dream up? What shape and function could this lowly color classic take? Lets go to work on this beast...start the idea mill...what should I do?

1) LightningMac. Cut a precise hole perhaps 3" in diameter above the monitor. Remove the innards of the Classic, and put mirrors on the inside walls. Buy a large lightning ball, maybe six inches in diameter (the glass balls with electrical displays inside, pink, blue, purple. What arethey, like neon bulbs but larger and more rarified?) and fit it inside with the top portion of the globe sticking out the top of the Classic. Fit a piece of black paper (or another mirror, if you like) around the bottom of the lightning ball (the bases of those are usually black). Wire the back switch to turn on the ball. LightningMac.

Oh, you want to use it as more than decor... um. A electric bug zapper that yells "SCORE" in Bruce's voice every time it fries?

YES!! Thats it!

No but seriously, I want it to actually DO something other than be decorative - I'd rather it perform some kind of electronic function...

Get one of the lightning balls that pulses to sounds, upgrade the Classic enough to install a jukebox program (SoundJam was excellent), and you've got DiscoLightningMac.
