Hi, I've got a Powerbook 3400. A while back, the plastic bit where the hinge attaches broke, but I modded it so that it would stay on well enough.
Just today, the other side went- half of the middle part broke off, and the hinge broke cleanly. it was probably weakened from the first break. the machine is booting and working again, I'm backing up as i type this, but the screen doesn't stay up on it's own.
Is there any way to replace the plastic "CPU Stiffener" with something made of metal, and reattach the screen to the hinge? As it is, it's just some black plastic painted grey, a 150$ plastic part. i don't have the cash to replace the laptop right now, I'm disappointed with there being such weak plastic parts where there should be strong metal anyway. I'm willing to learn how to do this, any ideas?

edit:i've got the screen standing on it's own, barely....i'd hate to travel with it.

the same thing happened to my pb 5300 way back when. the way they designed those powerbooks, with plastic frames inside, was terrible. firstly the plastic is prone to fatigue and weakening over time, plus the hinges of the screen get tighter over time because of the deterioration of lubrication and such. a recipe for big problems years after the warranty wears out.
i dont think anybody makes metal frames, though apple should have made them aluminum or magnesium originally... you may have to dish out. look on ebay though, they often have auctions for such parts.
good luck

an update :-)
i tried to keep the broken hinge from moving much. after that, the broken CPU stiffener shattered pretty badly, in at least 6 parts. the screen is no longer attached, and it's not very portable (the ribbon could be cut). I've taken measurements, and i've contacted a friend who knows a LOT about metalwork. I'm meeting him later in the week, and i'm hoping he can replace the bar in the front of the laptop with something much stronger. i won't ask him to replace the entire stiffener though, that's a lot of work, and the only real problem is the screen's demand for stregnth there.
i'll post results, and any details that might help others. wish me luck :-)
