I bought a set of hinges from www.powerbookmedic.com and replaced them myself. I am a former PC tech so it wasn't that hard to me. They sell the hinges for $249 for the pair. They also sell a Take Apart Manual you may want to pickup at the same time. I also found some very useful info at http://www.powerbooktech.com/knowled...e-Titanium.htm on the procedure for fixing the screen etc. I used Krazy Glue Gel to glue the screen back together and it hasn't caused me any problems since. I believe PowerBookMedics.com will also fix the screen for you but you may wish to e-mail them. Good Luck.

Eyecon,
Which parts of the hinge are you looking for? If it is the brackets and covers on the main body then I may be able to help you, I have a dead 15" case and screen.
The parts affixed to the screen I know are much harder and more expensive to replace. In the UK at least a totalled screen and cracked case parts make a powerbook uneconomic to repair.

I'm looking for any advice, instructions, pics, etc. that might help in deciding to tackle the repair myself: we have a G4/550 Gigabit Ethernet powerbook with a broken right hinge. The PB still works great when connected to an external monitor, so I wouldn't mind trying the repair job. I've seen right hinges on ebay for $100-120, so that's a lot less than the $500 pro repair places charge; plus I'm in Europe, so shipping would be extremely costly too.
I have the PDF tech manual for the Gigabit model and, yes, screen-related repairs do look daunting. Any help here would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

I just responded to your e-mail, but here is a link for others looking to repair their hinges themselves. I used Krazy Glue Gel when re-glueing my screen and the hinges. My only word of caution is be patient, and don't use to much glue as it will seep out onto the screen.

It is, or rather was a 667MHz DVI 15". The screen and case are history but all the insides appear to function, so I was thinking of buiding it into a special, using the DVI video output and an external keyboard & mouse.
Some bits of hinge are salvageable so depending on what bits are needed I may be able to help. I suspect though that it is the joint between the screen casing and the long cylindrical section with the sleep led in. Certainly that was the first bit to go on mine. What I do have are the brackets which bolt onto the upper case, including the internal supports and the covers (slightly marked.) The hard steel pins, the actual pivots, appear OK. If these are any use to anybody I'll certainly sell them.

Hi Bobcat,
I will take a closer look at just exactly WHAT is broken re. my right hinge. If the parts you mention that are still intact are the ones I need, I'd be very interested. Please let me know what price you're looking for, plus shipping - US Post Office is fine - to Europe. If you can take paypal that'd be easiest. Let me know.
Thanks,
Sean
