Has anyone considered sharpening the handles on their G5 so it would slice the hands of an unsuspecting thief.

They don't need to be sharpened to cut into you. I dunno about you, but I wouldn't be able to run while carrying one of those things!

Isn't there a built in locking mechanism for the latch. I'm guessing you lock it up with a notebook lock or something like that.

Quote from Apple website:

"Access is everything

That’s why the Power Mac G5’s easy-to-open side panel unlatches in a snap, giving you fast access to the slots and bays inside. Designed for no-hassle expansion, the Power Mac G5 lets you add things like memory or an AirPort Extreme card without tools. And easy-to-use drive guides let you mount high-capacity hard drives as soon as your requirements grow. Additionally, a locking mechanism on the side door prevents unauthorized access, keeping the inside of your computer safe from tampering."

You could buy a dual 2 GHZ one, take the outer box from one of the G5 little cases adnd pujt a GPS and a cellphopne in there, with the entire case of the computer is yur friggin antenna and it calls you every hour with the GPS readouut.

Or you could weld an appropriately cut railroad tie, 4 pieces horrizontally on each side, each end of the computer, ostensibly as carrying handles, and the computer's weight will triple.

They have software such as PCPhone home which I believe also works on Mac. Supposedly it works really well.

They'd throw your ass right in jail if a thief broke into your house and tried to steal your mac and then sliced his fingers off on your home-made booby trap. Prison time and a huge civil lawsuit would be likely results.

GPS is so so indoors, and if the machine was stolen, it would probably only be outdoors for a very short amount of time.

Or put a warning sticker, they can't really blame you if you warned them first...trust me, he'll think its a joke and then painfully realise it wasn't.

In some states, it's legal to use lethal force (!) against thieves, as long as you have provided warning.

Very ironic indeed. I'm glad from where I come from, I don't see such weird laws.

I know of no state in which is it legal to utilize lethal force in the case of theft. In the case of protection of yourself, many states (but not all) authorize the use of lethal force. In the case of protecting your home from an unarmed intruder, some states do authorize the use of lethal force - this is often mistakenly believed to offer "protecting your property with lethal force."

I can assure you that you would be in a world of legal **** if you used lethal force when not authorized - suppose, say, that somebody grabbed your powerbook and took off running when you were at the local coffee house - you can't shoot them. Nor could you if they opened the front door of your home and grabbed it off the coffee table and took off with it. Now suppose you were home and somehow got between the thief and the door and he pulled out his knife or said he was going to bash you over the head with your powerbook. You're on fine ground here - blast away.

But... the original question was essentially whether the guy could set a trap for a bad guy - which numerous courts have all held is illegal as all get out. Search for "katko v briney" or "spring gun" or "spring trap" and you'll find dozens of examples of home owners getting sued and even having criminal charges filed against them when they hurt or kill a thief.

1. bolt g5 to desk
2. create really nasty access hardware access software (i.e. hardware dongle to boot)

electrify the case

In some states all it takes to use lethal force is for an intruder to be in your home....I lived in Texas for several years and they believe in home protection! I am now in California and if somebody has broken into your house and you so much as even threaten them you can be sued...damn liberals! my personal opinion is you are on MY property, in MY house, you play by MY rules which include a liberal dose of lead!

back to the original question...how to secure the unit from theft...there is a security cable you can get and attach to the unit but that is only a deturent because if somebody REALLY wants it there is not much you can do but make it difficult for the easy theft
