The IBM 8MB cache consistently outperformed the Toshiba's 16MB cache drives at tests done by barefeats.com on 5400RPM versions. I just bought an IBM 7200 for $238.00 w/2nd day air from zipzoomfly.com (formerly googlegear.com).

Installed yesterday, also upgraded to 900 PL card last week, so it's a little hard to comment on speed increase, except I'm pretty happy with both. Xbench drive tests all doubled, some even tripled compared to 4200/2MB it replaced.

The new HD undoes your applecare and warrantioes, right? So the Apple people won't do it, so it mnakes sense toh install it yourself. WEhy sm I typing this?
Actual conversation between UCLA and Stanford during a login on early Internet - U: I'm going to type an L! Did you get an L? S: I got one-one-four. L! U:Did you get the O? S: One-one-seven. U: <types G> S: The computer just crashed.

A guy at apple told me if they do it or a apple authroized person does it, it wont void the warranty. Think a 16mb cache 7200rpm with panther how nice would that be. A true mobile computer.

Check out Xlr8yourMac's upgrade guide. That particular one is for Hard drives, but the install instructions should get you close to the optical drive. I replaced the DVD-CD-ROM drive in my powerbook with an aftermarket superdrive, and it was really easy. Save those little rubber grommits!

I would assume you're talking about replacing the HD in a laptop voiding the warranty, because replacing/adding HD's in a desktop doesn't affect your warranty at all. And nor should it, as it's a matter of 2 cables plugging into your new drive. Same with replacing the optical drive in your desktop.

I have a Western Digital Caviar Special Edition (8MB cache) 40 GB drive, as well as a Western Digital Caviar (2MB cache) 100 GB drive, and I noticed a huge difference between the drives. They're both connected in my Blue&White G3 with a Sonnet Tempo ATA/100 PCI card.

Granted I am not a lawyer, but the Tie-In Provision of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act specifically forbids this kind of behaviour.

See http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/15/ch50.html
and
http://www.mlmlaw.com/library/guides...s/undermag.htm

The first is the law itself, the second a nice lay-type persons description.

The only way apple can void your waranty is to show that you screwed the system when you installed the hardware, used out of spec hardware, etc.
