I was wondering if its possible to gut the new iPod Mini for it's Hitachi Microdrive. I've seen elsewhere where people are buying the Muvo2 4GB MP3 player, and taking out the guts to get to the 4GB Microdrive to use in their digital cameras, and then replace the 4GB card with a smaller card (like 256-512MB card) They have links for the firmware to downgrade their MuVo2 from a 4GB to a smaller card. I was wondering if anyone knew if the 4GB card in the iPod Mini was soldered on or not. Also is the Firmware available to downgrade the iPod Mini?

They're not even out yet, so how could you downgrade the firmware? To what, a development version?

As far as gutting goes, you'll probably be able to prise the case apart somehow, like you can with the current models. Seems like a stupid idea to me, though.

Not really a stupid idea, the 4GB microdrive inside cost $500 retail while the iPod Mini is only $250. To me and alot of others with Digital SLRs its well worth it to trash the iPod Mini for its microdrive.
