My Bondi Blue RevA iMac's CRT has died - I could make it into a fish tank like someone at Pixar did (see extras on the Finding Nemo DVD!), but I think the motherboard is fine and it seems a shame to chuck it out.

I've acquired an ancient LCII and matching Macintosh Color Display - does anyone know if the display would work with the iMac's motherboard (it has the right kind of video connector I think) or indeed would the display be damaged if I try to connect it?

I've read conflicting things on the web - one site says it won't work, another hints that it might... and I know next to nothing about Apple displays as until now my only Macs have been an iMac and an iBook!

Try to connect it and see if it works, I can't be 100% sure until you find out the exact model you are using.

Some of the displays don't have the correct refresh rates required to be able to mirror.

you may need one of these Click Here

Many thanks, Dex13, I think an adaptor like that and a normal VGA display is probably the way to go - I'll have a go with the LCII's display first though!

Oh well, no luck - although the iMac will boot with the video cable disconnected, it wouldn't boot with the LC's Color Display connected - it would stay powered up, but not boot... so I think I need an adaptor. Too bad I left Appletalk and sharing switched off on the iMac - Then I could at least get stuff off the hard drive!

Yes I might well do that - I'd like to try and rescue the iMac as a working machine first though - the children love playing Bugdom and Star Wars on MacMAME

I got a Belkin Mac to VGA adaptor and I have the iMac hooked up to an old PC's SVGA monitor now - and it works! Now if I end up with lots of time on my hands, I could upgrade the hard disc, put it in a new case, install OS X - and make a web server out of it...

Exactly! Even with the favourable (for us Brits) current dollar-sterling exchange rate, it's way too much dosh for me... pity as I looked at the iRack web site and it would be perfect. If I feel brave I might go down this route: http://www.carnforth.co.uk/imac/index.php
