I think it would be easier to o'clock it like I did to 533mhz. I did it more than a year ago and never had any freezes. I'm pretty sure I could have gone up to 600..

i agree and i saw your thread, but i have an extra 500 mhz processor from an upgraded G4. i am too much of a wimp to throw it in there to test it out. i feel like i could fry the logic board or something. i have ZERO experience with these sort of tweaks.

do i need to use a resistor if i overclock it? i remember reading somewhere once about a guy who just made a bridge of solder from one side to the other or something like that.

I used one, as the G4 is my primary machine I didn't like the idea of burning it.

seems to be so far. after i installed it i opened up DVD Studio Pro and started a new project. i imported 2 300+ MB files with no issues. i then started putting the menus and a slideshow together and had NO problems. i opened up photoshop and messed around with a few actions and had it create a web photo gallery. all of this with nothing but a very noticeable jump in speed. i checked the temp throughout the evening and the hottest it got was 82º F.

How did you check the temperature so accurately?

MenuMeters 1.1.1
there is CPU temp information available on certain machines and this great and FREE utility works flawlessly.
::edit:: i just checked the FAQ on the developer's site and found this:
Q:__Why is the CPU temperature display not supported on my machine?
A:__CPU temperature support is limited to processors which support the reading. Unfortunately most PowerMacs and PowerBooks built between 2001-2003 do not support CPU temperature readings. As this is a hardware limitation of the affected processors it cannot be fixed.
Q:__Why is the CPU temperature so inaccurate? It seems to be off by 10 degrees or more.
A:__The processor temperature sensor is not designed to be an accurate thermometer without proper external calibration. Since Macs lack the proper external calibration hardware the temperature reading may be off by as much as 20 degrees. This is a limitation of the hardware and cannot be made more accurate.

Am I right in assuming that the temperature this app returns in a DA is nonsense?
I had a similar app and before it read 24C, after the upgrade 28C. My hands were better sensors, they told me ~50C

Probably not total nonsense, but I doubt it is super accurate. 82 farenheit... for a 7400 running 167MHz faster than it was supposed to? I think not.

But where should this application take the measured value from? Are there other temperature sensors? Perhaps near the hard drives?

Hi, I've done almost the same thing-put a Sawtooth 450 (7400 chip) in my DA 466; it's running at 600 mhz, quite stable and cool. The various temperature gauges are not very accurate, but you can feel how warm the air is coming out of the power supply fan or by opening the case and feeling the heat sink. ThermoInDock is showing between 90-110 Fahrenheit, viewing a DVD, running iTunes Visualizer, and letting Altivec Fractal Carbon loop. MenuMeters temp reading almost identical.
Only disappointing thing is that Xbench scores are about the same with 600 or 466 ( later rev.7400 chip ?)-the 600 consistently scores a bit lower in CPU /Mops; much higher when I had Gigadesigns 800 w/2mb L3. Will be going to 1ghz+ or dual soon...
Here's link to X-Bench comparison between the two: Xbench-DA466 vs 600
The 466 is actually higher in some CPU scores-only differences - more ram in 600 test, 10.3.3 vs. 10.3.2 both of which should improve things, no?
