Title pretty much says it all. My friends brother came home for spring break last week and made the battery icon in the upper right corner on the ipod screen turn into numbers... don't know how. He says it has to do with something in the firmware or wtvr, But my friend doesn't know how to do it and his brother is back to college. The max "voltage" my friend gets is 420.

Thx in Advance

Gee, you know, 5 seconds (!) of Googling would find this info for you yourself. Search for (for example) "ipod voltage display" and share with people what you find. (And then in the future, do your own homework before posting!)

You know text over the internet despite your smiley conveys no direct emotion. So based on the reading of the your reply one could pick up on a spectrum of tones used.

If it took you took 5 seconds to find it on google why don't you take the extra 5 and post a link instead of being an ass? I didn't search google because since my friend couldn't find it I assumed that he had searched by normal means.

So in the future why don't you just post the link and then add "(And then in the future, do your own homework before posting!)" with your smiley and I probably wouldn't have considered you an ass.

...

ivolt

Toggle bewteen a voltage meter and the battery icon.

Because dude he is an admin and wants to try and keep things nice and clean in the forums. No one gains anything by having the same question posted a million times. He was trying to tell you to be a little more self sufficiant. when you post it may take a couple of days to get a response back when it would have taken a couple minues of doing homework. And with the case like your friend never assume that someone else has done the work to find out, cause most people get lazy when it comes to research

in all fairness, i am sure a lot of people, myself included, didn't know such a thing was possible. and if the solution to every problem or question were to use google, then there would be no point in running the forums, would there?

My point though is Ask the question after you are stumpped when you have run out of places to search. Research is a thiinng of the past it seems. If you have searched for a long time and you can't find an answer then go ahead and ask for help. But if during your research you do find the answer then bring to the forum and post for all to see if they wish also. It's not like the original poster was asking if it was possible. He knew it had been done and had seen it. Instead of waiting 24 hours just to see someone else post
"go to google and do a search" They would have had that information a full day earlier

You know it's not as if I said, " I NEED TO KNOW NOW, PLZ RESPOND ASAP!!!"

And keeping the forums clean? This modification is relatively new as it only works on 3g ipods and cannot be found in the forums as I "Searched."

And so what if I didn't search google, it wasn't as if it had been posted before, if anything it would have contributed to the community here at MacNN.

Stolen from iPod lounge via Macosxhints
This is very simple to do, I did it with my 3G iPod. From what I read, I think it will only work on the 3G iPods

Technically, the following is an iPod hint, but since you can perform it from the Terminal, I consider it at least somewhat OS X related ...

If you'd rather have your (third generation only) iPod display an actual value for its battery state (instead of the disappearing battery bar graph), just open the Terminal (with the iPod docked and available as a hard drive) and type:

touch /Volumes/your_iPod's_name/iPod_Control/Device/_show_voltage

Replace your_iPod's_name with the name of the iPod as shown in the Finder. Now eject, disconnect, and restart your iPod, and you should see a number in the top right corner of the screen -- on a full charge, mine was showing 474; I believe the maximum is 500.

I found this on iPodHacks while looking for something completely unrelated...
