I am absolutely perplexed at this:

I have a MDD G4 (purchased in November 03). OS X 10.3.3; 9.2.2

I got tired of the CPU fan noise, so I purchased a quiet Panaflo 120mm L1A (recommended at g4noise.com).

After installing the fan, i turned on my computer. As soon as i started the computer up, it went IMMEDIATELY into sleep mode. this happened both in OS X, and OS 9! even when i booted from the panther install CD, as soon as everything loaded, the computer instantly went to sleep. When I woke it up, it went right back to sleep again.

I removed the Panaflo and put the original fan back in. My G4 is back in perfect (yet LOUD) working condition.

Why would my mac go crazy after a simple fan replacement? Is apple trying to torture me?

Any help is GREATLY appreciated. thanks!

ryan.

maybe its a heat issue. it goes to sleep instead of shutting down like winblows machines do. try pressiong the cudo key, as well as reseting pram, nvram, and power management

i've never heard of how to reset nvram (don't even know what it is) or power management though, so someone may have to educated me :]

reset NVRAM can be done by starting up the mac holding down command opt o+f

type in "reset-nvram" and "restart" (or was it reset) and it'll have done it's job.

What it probably is, the fan you're using is plugged into a molex connector instead of the motherboard - the motherboard doesn't detect and voltage draw and thinks the fan is broke or something and puts the machine to sleep as protection.

Are you sure you connect the new fan correctly?

I did put the Panaflo 120mm M1A fan inside my DP 1.25 (FW800) without any heat issue or sleep/shut down. It works the same with the temperature up no more than 5C.

I did a slightly mod of the corners in order to get the fan in place. The black and red wires are connected to the motherboard. Also the arrow sign on the fan is pointed towards the heat sink.

Yeah, I also had to sand down the corners a bit to get it to fit in.

the fan is plugged into the motherboard, right into the same 2-pin where the old one was. (not sure what a molex connector is?)

flow direction is pointed at the heatsink.

i'll give the P and NVRAM resets a try.

UPDATE: the PRAM and NVRAM reset did not work. it looks like it's a heat problem though. i installed the fan with the computer being completely cool (it was off all night). everything ran fine for a while, then once again - POOF! sleep.

the fan (except when i first turned the box on) ran at high speed the entire time, again in both Mac OS9 and X.

i do a lot of work in OS9, so i'd really like to get this fan problem fixed. I'm not a hardware professional, is there anywhere, anyone I can take machine to for modifications?

Again, thanks for the help!!! this has been a REALLY frustrating experience for me, and it's been great having some other mac users help out.

UPDATE 2:

i took a look at the specs for the L1A and M1A:

The L1A's air flow is at: 68.9 CFM

The M1A's air flow is at 86.5 CFM

i do have a DP machine (which i didn't mention if my first post (sorry). Could this be the problem?

well.. I heard the L1A fan shouldn't be a problem since I saw other used it.
Actually, I did order the L1A, but I received a M1A on the mail.

I run SETI@home at the time and leave the machine on 24/7.
The temperature is now at 58.8C (~137.9F).

I hope you still have the stock fan, right? Try to put it back in and see what's happening.

read all the posts before asking these kinda questions. he already said in his first post that it works fine with the original fan. download thermographx and run the computer and watch the cpu temp before it goes to sleep mode. im thinking that the temp sensor is on the wrong scale. does your cpu get hot? buy a digital thermometer and test the cpu. is there a new thermometer built into the new fan?

for my above post hold down: command-option-o-f on startup and in the prompt type
reset-nvram [enter]
reset-all [enter]

this will restart your machine.

i wasn't aware that there was a thermometer built into the old fan? how do I tell if the new fan is equipped with one?

i don't know much about hardware stuff. is attaching a digital thermometer complicated? can anyone recommend where I could get one?
