Does anyone have any suggestions on replacing the video card in a cube? I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade a G4 cube so that I my boys can play some of the newer games that are out. such as Lord of the Rings Return of the King. At a minimum I need a new 3D Graphics Acceleration card such as the ATI Radeon 7500or nVidia GeForce 2 or better, with at least 32MB of VRAM) and a 1GHz or faster processor. Would a GeForce 3 work?
PowerLogix has processors that go up to 1.35GHZ so I know of the choices available to me on the processor end but I don't know what is available as far as video cards go for the cube. Does anyone have any suggestions?
Thanks,
Lou

personally, i would just buy them an xbox. it will be cheaper and less aggravating, in the long run. if you do go ahead and upgrade the cube, video card wise you will need at minimum, a geforce 3. that card, while still halfway decent, is 3.5 generations old, and may require being modified, depending on what type you get, in order to fit the cube. even with a 1.35 ghz G4 and a geforce3, game performance is going to be mediocre. the powerbook in my signature is marginal on games, and all my mac using friends who run less than a dual G5 have basically given up on new games due to performance. it isn't the hardware, per se, but the game ports. most of the game companies do the bare minimum to get the game running on a mac and then release it, with little to no optimization. unless you have another reason, besides games, to upgrade the cube i would get them an xbox.

For the cost of upgrading a cube, you can get a game console. If you want to upgrade the cube for yourself, go for it, but if you want games for 'the boys', get a console. The E3 gamers show is next week, see what comes out of that (there is a possibility of a cheaper 'PStwo' Playstation 2 console). That way, your kids are happy AND you get your computer back! a win/win situation if ever there was one .

u could flash a pc radeon 8500 ( $50 on ebay) but it takes some modification to get it to fit. Theres an article on xlr8yourmac that tells how to do it. Oh yeah, I definetaly recomend the powerlogix upgrade, since it runs much cooler than the others.

8500's for $50 ? Must be kidding - I buy all the 8500's I can get for flashing and resale - they haven't been that cheap in a long, long time...
