Hey Everyone,I saw some of those PCMCIA card adapters that fit in a type 1 or 2 slot, and let you plug compact flash cards into them. Seeing as a few russian manufacturers make compact flash cards up to 3 GB's now... I'm very interested in a small, backup drive in my 12" aluminum powerbook.

One such card is here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...60595&rd=1

I'm wondering, because I have a 12" will this fit in my airport slot, and when it has a compact flash card in it.. will my battery fit in ??!!? Has anyone done this.

3 GBS of extra backup for important data and messages would reallllly be sweet. Please let me know !
yep.

1. The 12" PowerBook does not have an AirPort slot, it has an AirPort Extreme slot, which is mini-PCI, not PC Card-like.

2. Lots of manufacturers make big CompactFlash cards, but they cost as much as the PowerBook. I think the biggest at the moment is 6GB.

3. Non-AirPort cards do not work in an AirPort slot, even if they do fit -- I've tried. I do not know if any non-AirPort Extreme cards work in an AirPort Extreme slot.

Basically, your only choice is to use some form of external storage.

Supposedly the reason PCMCIA cards don't work in Airport slots is because Apple swapped two of the data pins on the standard PCMCIA pinout (I have this on fairly good authority). So if you're feeling ambitious, you could probably build an adapter. Let us know if you do...lots of folks have talked about it, but I've never heard from anyone who actually has.

As Tooki said, the new PowerBooks don't have an Airport slot, they have an Airport Extreme slot. Airport was indeed a modified form of PCMCIA, while Airport Extreme is mini PCI.
