Hello Everyone,
I have heard many others talking about wanting to convert their old original Apple mice into opticals, so of course, I went and picked up another old mouse (i want to keep my current one in good condition and unmodified).

To start, I took out the ball, and unscrewed the bottom plate. then I just took out all the of chips and the plastic ball-set in it. To take out the chipset, you had to cut the wire (adb) there was no removable pins

However, when I cut the wire, I realized that it was 4 wires, just like USB. So this will come in handy for later.

Next, I picked up a gray (very close to matching the mouse's cable color!) male USB port. I wired in the usb and clipped the mail end on. Now I have a mouse-shell and male usb port.

I wrote down which wires were which in how the USB was connected. Soon, I will attain a smaller optical mouse (usb powered). I will take out the insides, and cut the cable, and rewire it to the correct wires on the mouse cable inside the mouse. So it seems I am using the old mouse and old cable.

I will have to superglue a small piece of metal / plastic / wood to the top of the button on the optical, so it lines up with the bottom of the apple mouse's button, and i will most likely have to make a small aluminum base inside the old apple mouse, to get the optical lined up correctly. Then it is all up to my trusty epoxy

Will post updates, please tell me your plans, and links / pictures of your progress, or any completed old apple mice mods

Take Care,
Dylan I.

edit: the usb cable is 4 wires and a cabled wrapped on the outside. the adb is 3 cables and a cable wrapped around. I am taking apart the usb end nad trying different combinatings when i get the optical.

Hey All,
Didn't get the sony 3.2, I ended up getting a much smaller, and higher quality Nikon 3.2 megapixel camera I love it. Too bad photobucket reduces my quality insanely... oh well. Here are two pictures of the mouse as of now.

1) The opening where the bottom of the optical mouse will come out the apple mouse. I may melt some plastic off for more space, or seal some in to close gaps... first I need a cheap usb optical mouse.

2) The inside of the top and bottom of the mouse. Also, the four wires to hook to USB.

3) Just an image of the bottom of the mouse itself.

Enjoy!

Yes, I know photo number two is out of focus, i was excited and took it too fast, hehe.
yep.
