I was trying to load system 10 and it gave me an odd message that it couldn't reset the startup disk to the CD drive. So it booted backup off the HD. Well I thought to myself I can fix that so I changed the startup drive in the control panel to the CD. Tried to reboot and nada. Now I can't get the lousy machine to even boot up period! It acts like it is going to.

Chimes

HD spins up

Monitor Light turns green from orange.

Then HD spins down

Monitor light turns back to orange.

Then nothing.

Help!

Have you tried a simple PRAM reset? Boot while holding down Command-Option-P-R. Keep them pressed until you have heard the startup chime a total of 3 times.

If that doesn't work, look for the CUDA reset button on the motherboard. It's normally the button closest to the battery (if there's more than one button at all). Press it one time, and one time only, and don't keep it held down -- you could crash the PMU.

O.K. I had tried the PRam RESET.

I found a round silver button on the edge of the motherboard that was marked "reset" So I pressed it once as you advised. Then I tried rebooting.

Chimes

Nothing.

I rebooted again while holding down the PR <option><apple> keys and after it chimed it display a white screen which read:

unkown word
open firmware, 2.4
To continue booting in MAC OS
type: BYE <return>
To continue booting off the default boot device
type: BOOT <return>
For open firmware serial I/O
type: TTYA IO <return>

ok
0>

And of course the keyboard is completely dead which means I can't type a thing. I even tried typing and hitting return even though I wasn't seeing anything in the hopes it was recording my keystrokes.

Nothing.

Well I finally got it! Thank goodness! I appreciate the tips. Wasn't getting anywhere and so I pulled all the cards and RAM out of the computer. I dusted everything off thoroughly and reseated everything.

Then it worked!
