Flashed Radeon 9800 SE
1.4 GHz PowerLogix 7457 G4 upgrade
120 GB 7200 RPM hard drive with 8 MB cache
1.5 GB Crucial CL2 PC133 RAM

You can also get a slot-loading 4x DVD burner. It uses the same style optical drive as the PowerBook G4s.

Luca,
1) In order to use a 9800 it requires modding the power supply and also the case of the cube itself.
2) The fastest upgrade for the cube is a 1.5GHz 7457 by Gigadesigns.
3) The cube is 100MHz and uses PC100 RAM, 133 is a waste of money because there is no speed difference because it just automatically back clocks to 100MHz.
4) The fastest Apple graphics card that fits in a cube without any modding at all is the GeForce3.
5) For the optical drive, there is a small silicon board that has the IDE connector and power on it, I do not know if that is removable or not, but I do not think it is.
6) The 9800 SE is the value edition or "**** Edition" as refered to by PC users and is a slower, cheaper version of the 9800 standard, which was taken off the market because it was capable of being flashed into a 9800 Pro.
7) Mac OS X does not have support for the 9800 SE, flashing it to believe it is a 9800 Pro isn't an intelligent idea because it will overclock the GPU and potentially fry it, and it may not even have meet the power requirements of the 9800 Pro.

I wouldn't call it a waste of money. Lately PC133 is cheaper and easier to find than PC100. Check www.kingston.com and compare the price for PC100 and 133. The cheaper of the the two is 133.

There was an FAQ entry at CubeOwner.com about modding a Sapphire Radeon 9800 SE to fit (and work) in a Cube. It was the only 9800 variant small enough to fit. I doubt it's a very common (or cheap) card, but Ronnie asked about MAXING out the Cube, and that's the fastest graphics card you can get that'll work. Yeah, it's an SE, but it's still better than a GeForce 3.

The GeForce 3 Mac Edition does work well, and it's necessary if you want a fast video card and an ADC monitor, but it's very expensive. You're better off getting a lower end video card, or a flashed one from eBay. There are GeForce 3 Titaniums selling for around $100, and you can also coax the Mac versions of the Radeon 7500, 8500, and 9000 into the Cube if you are uncomfortable with a flashed card.

Actually one of the most common video cards available for Cubes is a flashed Radeon 7000. While this is a very slow video card, it at least supports Quartz Extreme, so it's fine if you want a good user experience but don't care about gaming.

MCE sells a 4x DVD-R drive for use with the Cube. I thought it was a send-in upgrade service, but it's actually just the drive they send to you and you install it yourself. While you CAN buy it from them if you really want (it's $280), it's probably a lot cheaper if you find a generic place to buy the drive. MCE seems to overcharge for many of their items in the name of convenience.

You'd be just as well off tracking down a GeForce 2 that will fit without modification. The 7000 isn't really a better card. If you can afford it, the fastest card that will fit without modding is an OEM GeForce 3.

http://www.cubeowner.com is definitely the most exhaustive Cube info site on thhe web.
