I've upgraded my 6100 with a 247.5 MHZ upgrade from maxpowr.
(72mb RAM (8 MB onboard))

Just reporting that surfing and games like StarCraft and Baldurs Gate 1 is running smooth.

os9.0.4's performance is good, even when running 2-3 apps.

payed about 40 $ for the upgrade.
-worth the money, no doubt.

(mounted a new heavy fan to keep the temperature down, not required, but I recommend it.

I've been meaning to pick up an old 6100, particularly because I love the form factor. But mostly because the G3 upgrades for them can be had for so incredibly cheap.

Good job on keeping such an aging beast alive.

Also, I'd suggest upgrading to 9.1 as soon as possible. 9.0.x had more than a few instabilities.

NO offense, but I'm pretty sure 9.0.4 is the maximum os.

thx anyway.

If you pick up that 6100, give me a word.

Now I remember: 9.0.4 is maximum os, unless you get a 9.1 cd from apple.

So then 9.04 is NOT the max

Congrats on the upgrade. Wanted to upgrade my Dad's 6100 but couldn't swing the cost so he gave it away. Sturdy boxes too.

...Huh?

9.1 is a free update and it runs on all PowerPC Macs.

Nice job on the upgrade, I've got a 6100 sitting next to my couch waiting for an upgrade. I've been casually on the lookout for upgrades on ebay. I love the machine. The only problem I have is I can't get it to work with a PC monitor. I would love to hook it up to my KVM, but for now I'm stuck with the apple 12in monitor. Enjoy.

I've got two 6100s that I'm going to take to Office Depot for recycling in a few weeks. If anyone wants any parts, let me know. Free--you pay shipping.

Thanks for your support, but in this case, you are wrong

The 9.1 update won't, and never will run on nubus macs.
All the Pm's named (something)-100 is nubus Powermacs, which is the first PowerMacs.
(The mobo is pretty much the same as in the Quadras)

Btw, the upgrade will work in any '100, I tried make it fit in a 7100, but then I had to entirely rebuild the computer from the beginning. (Perhaps it's possible to make a solution, without, but at least you have to do something that would do more than "void your warranty...")

No, we were both incorrect. You stated that 9.0.4 was the maximum OS that the 6100 is capable of running. It is capable of running 9.1, but apparently the 9.1 updater is incompatible.

I linked you to the 9.1 updater and said it would work on all PowerPC Macs, which is apparently not the case.

Yeah, I discovered this a while back when I had a PowerMac 8100. I had OS 9.0.4 and when I tried to install the 9.1 update, it said it was incompatible. However, 9.1 DOES work on NuBus PowerMacs. But for some very strange reason, the only way to get 9.1 on one is to either move the hard drive to a different computer and install it that way, or get a 9.1 installation disc and use that instead. I don't have a 9.1 install CD - just a 9.0 CD my dad bought a few years ago and a 9.2.2 CD that I got with a newer computer. So I haven't actually tried it. It should work, though.

Congrats on the upgrade! Believe it or not, I found my 6115CD sitting outside the dumpster of my old apartment. All it needed was PRAM? battery and it was fine. It had system 8.X on it, but I upgraded it to 9.1 with a CD I had. Performance was sluggish with stock video and processor at 60Mhz. A Sonnet Crescendo G3 @ 480mhz, and a 2MB HPV card makes it fly though!

I also love the form factor, it kind of reminds me of my old Amiga 1000 in a way. Call me crazy, but it's a kick using a Mac built in 1994 to do internet, email, photoshop 7.0 and even some light gaming a decade later.

The only problem I have upgrading is getting large narrow 50 pin SCSI drives. They are hard to find >9GB and the old Seagate 18GB's are priced insanely (~$300.) I may try a IDE to SCSI converter from ACARD here soon. 4GB is just not enough storage anymore!

How much did that G3 upgrade cost you? Did you buy directly from Sonnet?

Hey PowerMacMan,

I actually bought it from OWC(www.macsales.com); it cost me $198.00 shipped. That's a lot of money to sink into such an old machine, but I really love the 6100's, so to me it was worth it.

There was a G3/500 on ebay recently, it sold for like $140.00. I have seen the G3/400 on some websites for around $120.00, which may be a better value clock for clock.

You can use U2W SCSI drives (68 pin) or SCA/SCA2 drives (80 pins). There are adaptors available on ebay for the 50 pin internal bus for about 4-5 bucks.

And PowerMacMan: the not so high clocked earlier G3 (approx. 266-300 MHz) are shipping on ebay for 40-50 Euro (~ 34-40 US $).

Hi Euphras,

Would there be any clearance issues with a 62/80pin SCSI drive with an adapter fitted? With my HPV card fitted, there seems to be very little room in the area behind the HDD.

I know this issue. Therefore i have removed the CD-ROM drive and placed the U2W disk (18 gig) in the middle drive bay. There´s lots of space. You can use the old SCSI drive as a second physical volume in the left bay. If you cut out the plastics of the drive bay unit in the middle you could probably go with 3 (THREE!!!) internal HD drives, but in this case additional cooling will probably be required.

I started thinking about the steps I took in getting my 6115CD set up, the software I downloaded etc, so I thought I'd make a little FAQ for anyone doing the same:

1. Cooling. If you are running the 500Mhz Sonnet G3 Upgrade along with an 7100/8100 HPV card, it will get hot. Very hot. I bought a few small case fans ~$9.00 and they keep the processor/video card area noticebly cooler.

2. Memory. 6100's can run up to 256MB (2X128MB), possibly even more if you can source 256Mb sticks. I am running 128MB+8MB in my 6100.

3. iTunes. Even in OS 9.1 Nubus machines cannot run Itunes 2 or above. The latest version I was able to install and run successfully was 1.1.

4. Browser. Although I.E. works okay, I prefer Netscape 7.02; it seems a little faster, and it has tabbed browsing (a must for me.)

5. CDROM drive. The X2 CDROM is woefully slow, so I upgraded mine to a X12 out of a dead 9600. It made a huge difference in read speeds. These things sell on ebay for about $5.00.

6. OS 9.1. You must install 9.1 from a CD, the update from apple will not work on Nubus machines.

That's pretty much it. Also, check out www.kan.org for an excellent guide in setting up a 61XX series machine. Have fun!
