The boards look the same. The mac firmware is available and there is a PC flasher utility. Has anybody tried this? The price differential of $120 here in Tokyo might make it worth a try!

I've ordered an AEC-6890 and will post the results of trying to flash it 6890M.

Don't waste your time. The SeriTek 1s2 (or renamed Sonnet version) outperforms even the 6890M's hardware RAID for around the same price as a 6290M. Acard's 6x90M-series cards are just a re-hash of the 6x80M-series with the addition of PATA to SATA converter chips. If you've seen any benchmarks of the Acard SATA cards, they perform no better than their Ultra ATA 133 counterparts. Kinda sad. Once they get back to the drawing board and design a new ASIC for SATA, they'll be a contender for SATA on the Mac.

This plan has hit a glitch because I can't find an Acard AEC 6890 anywhere in Tokyo. Everywhere (including mial order) is sold out and the shops are full of later newer PC models. What is interesting is that the AEC 6896S with 4 SATA channels shows support for OSX as 'Optional' on the packaging. Usually, when OSX is not supported, there is simply a Cross (X) but this use of optional suggests that support might be coming or is available with a firmware flash. The ACARD site shows nothing about this--any ideas?

I just called the Japanese distributor (Unity Corporation) and he told me there is a Mac version of the AEC-6896S which sells as the AEC-6896M. It does not use PATA-SATA conversion chip and supports 4 channels. BUT the Mac version is twice the price of the PC version. I asked why and he said it was just the size of the Mac market! I then asked about flashing the PC version to the Mac version and there was a long silence before he said it was not possible. I think it is not possible because there is no 6896M firmware posted anywhere yet, If there was, I think it might be doable. I am getting really tired of paying twice the PC price for Mac third-party hardware and would really like to break this mac surcharging practice.
The saga continues.

I borrowed an AEC689S (for PCs) and got the Mac firmware for the 6896M (for Mac) as well as the Raid utility for Macs but the problem is that the 6896S is not recognized in the Mac for the Mac Raid utility to flash it with the Mac bin file. I then moved it to a PC where it is seen but when I run the AEC flash.exe utility, it does not recognize the Mac bin file as a valid file for flashing the PC card. Seems like Catch 22. Any ideas. I don't have the skills to hack the bin files.

See if you can track down a guy called Cynikal. He made the region free firmware for the UJ-815 powerbook superdrives and provided me with several custom flashes for mine which was a PC unit in a G3 powerbook.

Slight difference between DVD and SATA, but firmware is firmware.
