The DVD-R drive in my QS G4 has for some reason bit the dust, so i am going to go for an Dual Layer upgrade.
I know that the Pioneer DVR-108 Will work with addition of the OS X firmware updater from Accelerate your Mac.
But this LG GSA-4120BA drive is a good £10 cheaper (yes it is a bit slower, but still faster than my old burner), will the LG drive work? Or is it a total unknown? I remember that CD-R drive compatibility was very good with a wide variety of drives supported, is there a similar situation with DVD burners?

Good question. I'm looking at Multi-Format burner drives, they're getting cheap enough and I perpetually need more storage space. I won't buy it to stick in a PC, but it'll be nice to replace my DVD-ROM in my G4 that doesn't read DVD-R and my old cd burner. If there's a list anywhere, I'd be thankful to have access to it, or I'll wait for blu-ray.

Yes, Toast normally works with the popular Drives.
But the original poster might want to use the iApps instead (and for that he needs to update the system with a patch)

in the end I ended up with the Pioneer, they didn't have any of the LG in stock.

Works out of the box (no firmware/OS patches required) Not had any dual layer disks to try it on yet though.
